Red Oak parents speak out at hearing
Parking was at a premium at Red Oak Elementary School Monday night as hundreds of parents poured into the gym to weigh in on the Red Oak school reassignment issue. The majority of those who spoke were against the new plans currently under consideration by the school board, plans that would pull more than 140 students from the Red Oak Elementary School and send them to Swift Creek Elementary instead. However, many of those also present were Swift Creek school supporters who encouraged acceptance of one of three proposed plans. More ...

Hazardous situation concerns Red Oak citizen
I listened attentively to the first twenty four speakers at the Swift Creek – Red Oak Elementary School reassignment hearing last night and regret that I did sign up to address the assembly. The parents' concerns, though some may have seemed narrow and limited to "their child," are understandable. We must appreciate the Board's responsibility to all children. More ...

Reassignment is for all the wrong reasons
First of all let me invite everyone in surrounding communities to come out and shop away at the grand opening of Red Oak's new dollar store. It is simply fantastic. I am sure its selection of inventory is the best around. The store blends so well with the other surroundings, especially the town's cemetery. The first thing you see driving into my community from Rocky Mount is the side of the dollar store, truly inviting.  More ...

It's time we solve the real problems at our schools
I don't think I'll ever understand the reasoning behind moving kids from their neighborhood schools. If you live five minutes from a school, you would think, logically, that it would be the school your child would attend. Moving that child to a school 10-20 minutes down the road seems crazy. It may relieve overcrowding at one school, but the cost of busing that student an extra 15 minutes will surely be expensive in the long run. More ...
