Murder suspect caught after overnight manhunt
CASTALIA — In a stolen car, Patrick Lynch didn't get far on $2 worth of gas.

It did, however, get him far enough to stretch a two-county-wide chase with three Nash County deputies from the L&L store in Castalia to the Gardner Road bridge late Wednesday morning — kicking off an area manhunt that brought more than 10 law agencies and 100 officers to Cedar Rock Baptist Church, where command dispatch launched a late-evening and early-morning, door-to-door, barn-to-barn search. More ...

Doctor dies in weather related car accident
Slowing down may prevent 90% of weather related accidents, according to First Sergeant Keith Stone, of the NC Highway Patrol.

Stone said last Thursday's icy conditions is a prime example. "We had one fatality and several accidents," Stone said. "Motorists need to slow down." More ...

Creative fire planners
Allison Poland and Toni Ward (from L-R) of Coopers Elementary School received plaques for their creative fire plans from Sparky the fire dog on January 12. Allison was chosen as the winner inside the Coopers Fire District and Toni was chosen outside the district. Coopers Fire Department, including the Junior Department, came out during Fire Prevention Week and worked with third graders on their escape plans in case of a fire. School district faces corrective action for AYP failures
During the first week in February, parents of students in the Nash- Rocky Mount School System will receive a letter informing them that their school system has been designated as low-performing and is facing corrective action as it enters its third year of District Improvement status. This designation describes school districts or LEAs (Local Education Authorities) which fail to meet criteria established by the federal No Child Left Behind Act. More ...

Citizens question first redistricting option
As the controversy over the proposed redistricting of the Red Oak School District continues to brew, some parents are questioning the motives behind the move that would send roughly a third of current Red Oak Elementary students to Swift Creek Elementary School. At the recent Red Oak public forum hosted by the school board, several parents made reference to the fact that they felt that students from the higher-performing Red Oak Elementary were being sent to the lower-performing Swift Creek in order to boost test scores in that area and thus improve the standing of the Nash-Rocky Mount School District. More ...

The MedLink Program is a program of the Upper Coastal Plain Area Agency on Aging and is supported with funds from the Health and Wellness Trust Fund Commission. Travelogue of recent family plane trip

According to First Sergeant Keith Stone of the NC Highway Patrol, people around here drive too fast when the weather is bad. I must say that I agree.

I've always been amused at North Carolina's reaction to cold weather, more specifically ice and snow. Embarrassed might be a better word.  More ...

Nominations for citizen of the year are needed
Believe it or not, it's almost time for the Nashville Chamber of Commerce's annual Distinguished Citizen Award Reception. The event is set for Thursday, March 1st and will be held at the Nash Arts Center. (Be sure to watch for details in The Graphic.)

The chamber is soliciting nominations from members and the community. Nominations for a recipient of the award are being accepted until February 15. If interested in submitting someone's name as a nominee, you can get a form here at the newspaper office or just simply send the nominee's name along with your contact information to the chamber. Also include some information about the person you're nominating such as his or her community contributions, etc. More ...
