Nashville’s Beth Lucas is Principal of the Year
Nashville Elementary School Principal Beth Lucas will do just about anything to motivate her kids to learn, even if it means kissing a farm animal. As the 06-07 school year wrapped up, Lucas puckered up and proved just how serious she was. Her students had significantly raised their Accelerated Reading Scores and as Lucas promised, she would kiss a pig. But, instead of a pig, Lucas kissed a donkey.  More ...

Thomason is awarded Order of Long Leaf Pine
Jackson Ricky Thomason (pictured in front) was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Monday night by District Court Judge Pell Cooper (sitting in back) on behalf of North Carolina Governor Mike Easley. The award is the highest honor bestowed on a NC Citizen and is awarded to individuals who have a proven record of extraordinary service to the state. Thomason served many years as a Nashville Firefighter and was instrumental in starting the first responder program here.  More ...

Library set to close for moving
Moving day is quickly approaching for Nashville’s Cooley Library and library patrons are rushing in to get books before the facility closes.
The library will be open through Saturday, September 29. After that, it will be closed for its relocation to the new facility on Church Street. During the moving period, all programs will be stopped. However, the book drop will remain open at the Barnes Street location. More ...

Castalia commits to street repair projects
Castalia Commissioners voted to hire Smith Construction to complete much-needed repairs on Church Street and Estelle Street despite the fact that another company actually came in with lower figures for repairing those streets. According to Mayor Elene Leonard, Smith came in with a lower bid overall for a project that would also include repairs to Harrison Street. However, commissioners voted to delay construction work on Harrison until funds were available for that project.  More ...

RAP grant applications due by Oct. 5
The Regional Artist Project Grant is a grant program that provides financial support to developing professionals by funding a project pivotal to the advancement of their careers as artists. These grants are intended to fund a particular project that will conclude by June 30, 2007. Artists developing a professional career in the arts and who have completed the basic education in his/her art form are encouraged to apply.  More ...

Debu-ette Club kicks off new year
The Rocky Mount Debu-ette Club recently kicked off its 2007-08 year with a Mother-Daughter Tea for the freshman class at Englewood United Methodist Church. The incoming freshman class consists of fifty-five girls and five adult advisors. The advisors, pictured with Executive Board Chair Jean Thompson, will devote the next four years to mentoring the girls through community service projects and helping them become leaders in civic and social events. More ...

Students, staff and parents pledge to “Change a Light, Change the World”
Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools recently kicked off the 2007 ENERGY STAR “Change a Light, Change the World” program as part of the school system’s continuing efforts to save energy and to protect the environment. Progress Energy donated 200 ENERGY STAR fluorescent bulbs for the campaign kickoff and presented them to Nashville Elementary School principal Beth Lucas along with her students and staff. More ...

Today was homecoming at Mt. Zion and we had good attendance, worship service, food and fellowship. There were 106 in Sunday school, including four visitors. Congratulations Ms. Lucas, N-RMS Principal of the Year
Last Tuesday, I had the pleasure of attending Nash-Rocky Mount School’s Teacher and Principal of the Year ceremony. The evening was an exciting one, with three teachers winning all sorts of goodies. One teacher went home with the distinct title of the NRMS Teacher of the Year but also left with a new car.
