High winds fuel fires in Nash County
Fire departments throughout Nash County were busy on Sunday, as miscellaneous fires broke out all over the county due to the high winds.
A fire just outside of Nashville burned the former home of Frederick B. Cooper Sunday evening. Cooper was a member of Nash County’s Board of Commissioners for 35 years. He served as chairman for 14 of those years. The home, down a path on Frederick Cooper Lane, now belongs to Cooper’s daughter, Gail Gentry, of Morehead City. More ...

County looks at pay study for employees
At a work session Friday in Edgecombe County, Nash County Commissioners received the results for a Pay and Classification Study that recommends several changes to the county’s current pay plan.
Becky Veazey, of The MAPS Group, presented the study to commissioners Friday morning at the Conference Center in Edgecombe County. Veazey told commissioners a study is done to recruit and retain employees, for equal pay for equal work, to maximize cost effectiveness and for internal equity. Veazey said a study is typically done every three to five years.  More ...

Investigator Sam Weeks of the Nash County Sheriff’s Office presented information about local gangs to Castalia Commissioners at the regular February 5 meeting. Mayor Ellene Leonard said that she had requested that Weeks come because there had been “rumors of gang activity” in the Castalia area. More ...

Town celebrates Eagle project with ceremony
After months of hard work and fund raising efforts, Allen Stanton’s Eagle Scout project is complete. Last week, town officials and local veterans met at Nashville’s Battleship to celebrate Stanton’s project.
Stanton began planning for his Eagle Scout project in the Summer of 2006. He took a little time off during the school year to focus on his studies but started working again on the project in 2007. More ...

Spring Hope Police considers Community Watch program
Spring Hope Police Chief Tim Denton told board members at their regular meeting Monday night that he is interested in starting back up a community watch program in the town.
Chief Denton, during his regular report, told board members a newly hired officer, Clint Smith, would be in charge of the program if it were to become a reality. Denton said he was bringing the idea before the board to see what their thoughts were. If board members agreed, Denton would then see what type of interest he could get from the community. More ...

Nashville man killed in single car accident
A Nashville man was killed in a single car accident early Friday morning.
According to a spokeswoman with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Bryan Keith Sessoms, 50, of Nashville, was traveling north on Womble Road around 6:30 a.m. when he ran off the road and into a sign. After colliding with the sign, Sessom’s vehicle went airborne across Basket Creek and overturned and collided roof first with an embankment. The vehicle then slid into the creek. More ...

Driving through downtown Nashville, you may notice the addition of three flags flowing in the wind on the Battleship. The flags are an excellent, and appropriate, addition to that area and were the idea of a local scout.
