Wright to finish husband’s term on council
During its annual retreat on Monday, Nashville’s Council unanimously voted to let Frank Wright’s wife, Jackie, serve the remainder of his term.
The item was brought before the council at the end of the day long retreat. Mayor Donald Street told council members several options were available to fill Wright’s seat. Wright passed away in November.
“Of course we are all saddened with the loss of Frank and the appropriate amount of time has passed and we need to make some decisions,” Street said.  More ...

Louisburg woman kidnapped, shot
The Wake County school system has suspended a teacher and Franklinton resident while it investigates claims that she shot a N.C. Wesleyan student during a kidnapping attempt.
The teacher, Dawn Perry, also had a run-in with a student at Franklinton High School more than two years ago.
According to reports from Franklin and Nash county law enforcement agents, Perry, 44, of Hodges Road, confronted Jessica Perry, 18, in the Rocky Mount college parking lot in the late afternoon hours of Jan. 18. More ...

Hundreds of Ruritans met in Myrtle Beach last week for the 78th Annual Ruritan National Convention.
The convention is held every year for Ruritans from all over to meet and discuss the business of Ruritans. Though the convention includes many social events for Ruritans to enjoy, the three-day convention also is a chance for Ruritan National to install its new officers and say goodbye to past ones. Castalia Commissioners pursue water funding
Castalia Commissioners are actively pursuing funding options in order to bring county water to the town. Nash County Services and Grants Director Patsy King was on hand at the January 6 business meeting in order to discuss funding options. Board approves new high school layout plan
In its January meeting, the state Board of Education approved allowing retesting results of students for ABCs Performance Composite and Annual Yearly Performance (AYP) status calculations.
“This will give a clearer picture of where the schools stand,” board member Franklin Lamm told The Graphic. “Before, retests could be used to promote a student but could not be used to help the schools. This change just makes sense.” More ...

Nash man in hospital after accidental shooting
A local man is in the hospital after an accidental shooting at his home.
According to Lt. Pat Joyner of the Nash County Sheriff’s Office, a call came in of an accidental shooting at the home of Ralph Langley, who owns a car garage on Oak Level Road. The business used to be located on Washington Street where CVS Pharmacy now sits.  More ...

Nashville resident elected to State Soybean Board
Jeff Tyson of Nashville was elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the North Carolina Soybean Producers Association at the forty-second annual meeting in Durham on January 15th. Tyson will represent Edgecombe, Halifax and Nash Counties and replaces Bobby Joe Fisher who was elected board president. More ...

-The bodies of Leona Johnson and Deborah Scriven are found inside a home at 1247 Compass Creek Drive in Rocky Mount with gunshot wounds. A third victim, Devin S. Criven was transported to Pitt County Memorial Hospital. Johnson was a secretary in the Uniforms Operations Division for the City of Rocky Mount Police Department. ROCKY MOUNT -- Junior Trey Drake poured in a game-high 25 points and dished out four assists to lead his Battling Bishop men’s basketball squad to an 80-76 victory over Greensboro College last Saturday afternoon in Everett Gymnasium.
