NRMS to stay with current benefit carrier
The Nash-Rocky Mount School Board again discussed carriers for employee benefits at its work session last month, deciding to stay with First Financial Group. The board will officially vote on the matter at its regular meeting on December 7.
At its work session last month, the board voted unanimously to approve First Financial. The benefits committee had heard presentations from three companies and had determined that First Financial was the best of the three. The board was set to vote on the carrier at the November 2 regular meeting.

Corbett named Lt. of Nashville PD
Nashville Police’s Department promoted Joseph W. Corbett, III to the position of Lieutenant.
Ray Goodwin formerly served as lieutenant until his retirement in October.
Corbett’s promotion was effective on November 17.
Corbett started with the Nashville Police Department in 2006 after working with the Sharpsburg Police Department. In 2007, Corbett was named Nashville’s first full-time Community Policing Officer. He later served as an investigator up until his recent promotion.

NCC HOLDS PLANE CRASH SIMULATION
Nash Community College EMS students were able to use their training during a plane crash simulation last Tuesday at the college’s Public Safety Training Facility. Students participated in the simulation, which included a real airplace fuselage simulating a crash into an occupied building. The college’s two-story burn lab was used in the simulation. NRMS receives clean audit
The Nash-Rocky Mount School Board received a clean audit opinion for the 2008-2009 fiscal year from Dixon Hughes at its work session last Monday night. However, one deficiency was noted in the report.
Dixon Hughes manager Mark Soticheck presented the audit report to the board. Soticheck complimented the finance department and board for its fiscal awareness even during a tough economic time. More ...

Nashville to host Shriner’s Parade in 2011
The Sudan Shriners want Nashville to be the host of its ceremonial parade in 2011.
Bruce Bulluck, who currently serves as the Assistant Raban for the Sudan Shriners, came before Nashville’s Town Council last Wednesday night for a public hearing on the application for permit of the street event. Nashville’s Town Council unanimously voted in favor of the event at its regular meeting on Tuesday night.

Red Oak passes cell tower ordinance
Red Oak Commissioners reconvened their November business meeting on Monday, November 23 in order to hold a public hearing on the adoption of a new cell tower ordinance for the town. After a brief public hearing with no community participation, the new ordinance was unanimously adopted. However, the adoption may come too late to prevent the installation of a new 300 foot cell tower within the town limits. More ...

Operation targets prescription drug dealers
The Nash County Sheriff’s Office is working to get prescription drug dealers off the streets.
The Narcotics Division began Operation: Punisher several months ago and is now on phase three of the operation. Operation: Punisher is a seven month long undercover campaign targeting drug dealers throughout Nash County. The operation was designed to infiltrate organizations operating in Nash County who distributed prescription pills, ecstasy pills, cocaine and marijuana. More ...

Nashville’s Christmas Celebration
DECEMBER 5 • DOWNTOWN NASHVILLE

The Nashville Children’s Christmas Parade and Celebration is set for Saturday, December 5 in downtown Nashville.
The event will begin at 3:45 p.m. on December 5 and children 12 years old or younger are invited to come out with their decorated bikes, wagons, scooters, strollers or themselves and take part in this annual event.
Red Oak and Nash Central Middle School Bands will perform prior to the parade on the Nash County Courthouse steps. The Nash Central High School Chorus will also perform.

Nash County ABC expands warehouse
The Nash County ABC Board is expanding its warehouse space at its Nashville location.
Mike Murray, Law Enforcement Chief for Nash County ABC, said an additional 3,000 square feet is being added to the warehouse.

Missing woman found
A Whitakers woman reported missing last week has been found, Rocky Mount Police reported over the weekend.
Candy Mae Bullock, 70, was reported missing last Monday by her sister. She had been spotted throughout the week at various locations in Rocky Mount. Gloria Battle, a friend of Bullock’s, was alerted to the fact that Bullock had been reported missing and called police. Bullock and Battle were visting friends on Clark Street in Rocky Mount.

L&L assists local schools
L&L Stores helped 4 area schools receive $500 grants from the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance program in 2008. In 2009, L&L again worked with four area schools to secure $750 grants for each school. The grants were made possible by funding from the Exxon Mobil Corp. More ...

Local man recognized at state fair for home grown sweet potatoes
Nashville farmer Jason Pridgen entered his award winning sweet potatoes in the 2009 NC State Fair. There were almost 100 40-pound boxes taken to Raleigh to display.
Pridgen’s hard work paid off, as he was awarded the County Sweepstakes for Nash County.
Pridgen also entered his sweet potatoes in the Wayne County Fair, Wilson County Fair and the Rocky Mount Fair. He was awarded ribbons at all of these fairs as well. More ...

Coopers Elementary sends care packages to troop in Iraq
Fifth grade students at Coopers Elementary have worked together to provide Care Packages for soldiers of the NC Army National Guard 30th Heavy Brigade Combat Team in Iraq. Students also wrote letters to the soldiers.
“Coopers Elementary was honored to write troops serving in Iraq and to provide some snack items to remind them of home,” said Paulette Ream, Guidance Counselor at Coopers Elementary School. More ...

District Court Judge Anthony Brown attended the regular meeting of Nashville’s Town Council to swear in its newest council members as well as the mayor pro tem.
Town Council members unanimously elected Charles Taylor to serve as the mayor pro tem for the next four years. Taylor has been on Nashville’s Town Council since December 2007.

Nash Community College Health Sciences Department Chair Tammie Clark received her doctor of physical therapy degree this spring from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Rocky Mount resident earns degree from Western Carolina
Western Carolina University conferred degrees on 417 students who completed their studies during the summer 2009 term.
A total of 170 undergraduate students received academic honors with 103 graduating summa cum laude, 46 graduating magna cum laude and 21 graduating cum laude. More ...

Local organization holds scholarship banquet
The Tar River Chapter of Les Gemmes, Incorporated, whose mission is committed to promoting positive influence within the local community  by providing successful interactions, recently held a banquet celebration in memory of their deceased member, Nancy G. Joyner.  The organization held its first Nancy G. Joyner Scholarship Banquet on Friday, September 25, 2009, six o’clock p.m. at the J. E. Thorne Family Life Center.  The chapter named its scholarship in honor of Nancy G. Joyner simply because she exemplified a woman of enthusiasm, of love for children, and stressed the urgency of achieving an education above and beyond high school.  Mrs. Joyner was an influential promoter of education in the Nash Rocky Mount area, and always encouraged and motivated children to study and be the best that they could be.

Hubbard students raise funds in memory of classmate
M. B. Hubbard Elementary School recently raised $888.77 in their Pennies for Patients campaign. The funds will go directly to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to help with cancer research and services for patients. Students and staff at Hubbard conducted the campaign in memory of a very special classmate, Daekwon Brodie who lost his battle with cancer last year.  The campaign was kicked off on Daekwon Brodie’s birthday. He exemplified the character traits that NRMPS stresses in October and November, responsibility and citizenship. “Daekwon exhibited great citizenship and was one of the most responsible students I have ever taught”, stated his teacher, Tiffany Burnette. More ...

Brother Bob Watkins welcomed everyone to Sunday school and reported 94 present, including 2 visitors, Rev. and Mrs. Jessie Caton. They served as our interim pastor several years ago and they come back occasionally to visit. We are always glad to see them and welcome them. Our choir sang “I Will Sing of the Mercies” for the call to worship. Pastor Rogerson welcomed everyone to worship hour and prayed the invocation. Hymns of worship were “Praise Him! On the 21st of Nov., the Ladies Aid at Beulah sponsored a Thanksgiving supper at the fellowship hall, catered by Parker’s of Wilson. Afterwards the New Grace Singers brought us some really great singing which was a blessing to all who attended. This group is made up of Skyler Smith, his wife, Julie and Kevin Lamm. Ray Page and his wife, Julia came with them also. Ray sang a few songs also. Ray and Julia are the parents of Julie Smith. We hope to have this group back again soon. More ...

Last week, Nash-Rocky Mount School Board Chairperson Evelyn Bullock verbally charged that the The Nashville Graphic had insinuated that she had some other motive for wanting to put the school system’s health care benefits out for review and/or evaluation by The Pierce Group.
She said she did not like the “tone” of the article.

When I was a little girl, a very little girl, I didn’t know what cell phones were. I didn’t have my first cell phone until I was maybe 16 but I don’t recall using it very often. I may have even been closer to 18 before I had my own cell phone. Now that I’ve had one for the last 10-15 years, I’m not sure what I’d do without one.

RED OAK -- Little did Raven Lee know that a few by-chance trips to Buies Creek would lead to her finding a collegeiate home.
Over the past several years, Lee has often traveled with Betsy Braswell, her friend and Northern Nash softball team, to watch Betsy’s brother (Bryan) perform for the Campbell  University baseball squad.
Lee was taken immediately by the campus, and she decided to visit Campbell this past summer to participate in the softball camp. More ...

Bulldogs go 2-1 at tourney
GREENVILLE -- The Nash Central High School wrestling team traveled to Rose High School last Tuesday to compete in the Rose Quads.
The Bulldogs rallied to defeat Knightdale by a 42-40 score, thanks in part to Derek Manning’s key pin at 145.
Central also topped Roanoke Rapids 60-21 and was beaten 52-24 by the host Rampants.

Tickets available for Victorian Crazy Quilt, drawing to be held in February
The Tar River Chapter, (Carolinas Region) of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America, Inc.,   is hoping to bring  Through the Needle’s Eye, the EGA, Inc. 19th National Exhibit to Rocky Mount, North Carolina in the fall of 2011. The exhibition, which will be displayed at the Imperial Centre galleries will be co-funded by the Arts Center, a division of the City of Rocky Mount Parks & Recreation Department and our Tar River Chapter.
