Census data aids Nashville’s revenue
Nashville Town Manager Preston Mitchell announced at the town’s recent budget work session that he doesn’t expect any major impacts on the 2011-2012 finances from the state according to the most recent update on the Senate’s proposed budget, but there will be some indirect and minor ramifications.
He also informed the council  that Nashville was one of only three municipalities to have a higher 2010 Census count than the 2009 state estimate and had the highest numerical increase in Nash County. More ...

Nashville man pleads guilty to federal charges
James Edward Whitley pled guilty to charges of wire fraud and money laundering in federal court on Friday, May 13.
Whitley, 65, of Greensboro, was indicted in September 2010 on 20 federal charges of wire fraud and money laundering.
According to the indictment, Whitley, who is a Nashville native, solicited investors who lived on Bald Head Island, in the Greensboro area and elsewhere from December 2006 to around July 2009. More ...

Nash County budget woes to affect NCC
Nash County Commissioners met Tuesday for another round of budget discussions, this time meeting with Nash Community College officials to hear their pleas for increased funding for the growing educational needs of the community. Nash Community College President Bill Carver had submitted a capital fund request for $1,910,050—nearly ten times the amount budgeted in the 2010-2011 budget. More ...

Committee eyes new redistricting plans
The Nash County Redistricting Board met Thursday, May 26, to hear from Attorney Adam Mitchell regarding new proposed district maps for the county. Mitchell, an attorney with Tharrington and Smith in Raleigh, was hired by Nash County in order to assist in the redrawing of the maps prior to the May 2012 primary. More ...

Nashville Police Dept. to offer citizen’s academy
Nashville’s Police Department wants to build a better bond with the citizens it serves. That’s why the department will host its first ever Citizen’s Police Academy starting on August 4.
Though this will be the first Citizen’s Police Academy, Lt. Joseph Corbett said he hopes it isn’t the last.
“We’ve actually wanted to do it for the last three or four years,” Corbett said. “And for whatever reason the puzzle pieces fell into place for us this year.” More ...

McMahon named Superintendent of the Year
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) named Nash-Rocky Mount Schools Superintendent Rick McMahon Bob McRae Superintendent of the Year. At their annual meeting in Chapel Hill earlier this month, the association presented seven statewide awards this year to those “who have done the most for high school athletics.”

Tickets are still available for the annual Reverse Raffle, sponsored each year by the Nashville Fire District Auxiliary.

The North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service has presented the 2011 Governor’s Award for Volunteer Service Medallion Award to Milton Battle, a Northern Nash High School student. 
In 2006, the NC Commission implemented the Governor’s Medallion Award for Volunteer Service. This award recognizes the “top 20” volunteers in the state. More ...

The 21st Annual BSA Classic Scholarship Banquet, held at Edgecombe Community College on Thursday, May 19 awarded $27,000 in college scholarships to 54 high school seniors from across eastern North Carolina.  Five of those seniors were from Nash County schools. More ...

NC State University announces Dean’s List
North Carolina State University Chancellor Randy Woodson announced that 6,507 undergraduate students earned Dean’s List honors at NC State during the Spring 2011 semester.
To make the Dean’s List, students must earn an academic grade-point average of 3.25 or higher if they are carrying 15 or more hours of course work, or a 3.5 grade-point average if they are carrying 12 to 14 hours. More ...

UNC-Pembroke Chancellor’s and Honor List
Nash County residents were among those named to the Chancellor’s and Honor’s Lists during the 2011 Spring Semester at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
Rocky Mount residents named to the Chancellor’s List include Alexis Kara Cooper and Ashley N. Davis. Other Nash residents named to the Chancellor’s List include Marcus Eugene Lynch.

Peachtree Church held a Memorial Day Service on Sunday morning.  Sanctuary flowers were given by Diane and Frank Bunn in honor of their daughter, Jamie, on her birthday. The service began with a video presentation titled “We Will Remember.”  This was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the USA, led by Destiny King.  Fay Vick gave a brief testimony in remembrance of her son, Eric, who was lost in Iraq in 2007.  She then sang ‘God Bless the USA,” written by Lee Greenwood. More ...

WEATHER LESSON AT WINSTEAD ELEMENTARY
Scott Dean, WTVD–11 Meterologist, visited second graders at Winstead Avenue Elementary on Tuesday, May 10th.  He discussed the water cycle, tornadoes, hurricanes, and cloud formation.  The students were particularly entertained by his visual presentations of how electricity is formed through the use of a balloon, his tornado creation with two-liter plastic bottles, and his simulation of a vortex using a jump rope!  Mr. Dean’s presentation correlated with the second grade weather curriculum. More ...

NASH COUNTY -- Wilson County powerhouses Fike and Hunt dominated regular season play in the Big East Conference -- so it was only fitting that they were well-represented when the league came out with its 2011 All-Big East squads.
Each club had six players on the First Team after tying for the regular season crown with identical 8-1-1 ledgers.

RED OAK -- Legendary coach Grover Battle will host the annual Northern Nash High School Girls Basketball Camp from June 13-15 at the NNHS Gymnasium.
The event will run from 5:45 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. each day and is open to girls in grades 4-12.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Rocky Mount Coleman-Pitt Post 58 has opened its 2011 American Legion baseball season with a 2-3 start to its campaign.
Post 58 plays all its home games at the Dawg Pound at Nash Central High School.
The five contests it has played included losses to Cary Post 67 (6-5 defeat at home), Durham Post 7 (18-10 loss at home, 10-7 defeat away) and two wins over Pitt County Post 39 (6-3 win at home, 10-7 triumph at home). More ...

A PERFECT SOCCER SEASON
The Knights were the Under-12 Hot Shot Soccer regular season and tournament champions -- going undefeated through both. The club averaged just under five goals per contest, while allowing just under one goal per game. In the tourney, the Knights scored at a three-goal-per-match clip, and didn’t give up a single goal.
