A 12-year-old boy continues to recover at Vidant Medical Center after a wakeboarding accident recently.
Caleb Whitford was at Lake Gaston with his family wakeboarding  Saturday, June 9 when he took a rough fall, hitting his head. After complaining of having stomach and head pains, he was taken to Halifax Hospital and then transferred to Vidant Medical Center. More ...

Reassignment committee eyes new high school plan
The Nash-Rocky Mount School Reassignment Committee met on Tuesday, June 12 in order to review a revised high school reassignment plan that will impact fewer students than the previous plan. The new tentative maps were drawn by the Operations Research and Education Laboratory (OREd), who has been hired by the school system to help with statistical analysis of the population and the balance measures prioritized by the school board. More ...

Oak Level celebrates “Independence Day”
In July, the Oak Level Community Against Forced Annexation (OLCAFA) will replace its signs that express their discontent over the annexation attempts of Rocky Mount with new ones that celebrate their victory.

Payment plan for teachers remains unchanged
Public school employees who work for 10 months will still be paid in the same manner as they have been — whether they have opted to be paid over 12 months or in 10 makes no difference. NRMPS unveils NC-WISE data centers
Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools recently approved a means of registering students to the school district, while centralizing student data management processes.  
There are two models, one beginning July 9 and concluding July 26, involving elementary schools.  This summer parents will register their children at one of five data centers located at NRMPS middle schools. The five centers were selected based on proximity to elementary schools and current feeder patterns. More ...

A local girl collected over 1,000 pairs of used shoes to donated to Soles4Souls.

Certified Nurse Midwife
Janet E. Intini of Zebulon, a nurse at Nash General Hospital, recently passed the national board exam to become a Certified Nurse Midwife. She earned her master’s degree of science in nursing with a concentration in midwifery from East Carolina University, where she received the Outstanding Graduate Student in the Nurse Midwifery Concentration by the faculty. More ...

The James Waverly Moore family of Red Oak held their annual family reunion on June 3, 2012. There were four generations of family members present. North Carolina State University Chancellor Randy Woodson recently conferred 5,236 degrees when the university held its 2012 Spring Commencement on Saturday, May 12 at PNC Arena in Raleigh.
Candidates for degrees were from 98 North Carolina counties, 37 other states or U.S. territories and 47 foreign countries. NC State holds graduation ceremonies each year in the spring and fall. More ...

NC State announces Dean’s List
North Carolina State University Chancellor Randy Woodson announced that 6,961 undergraduate students earned Dean’s List honors at NC State during the spring 2012 semester.
To make the Dean’s List, students must earn an academic grade-point average of 3.25 or higher if they are carrying 15 or more hours of coursework, or a 3.5 grade-point average if they are carrying 12 to 14 hours. More ...

Teachers and Instructional Assistants in Pre-K through 2nd Grade recently presented “Around the World in a Day” to Cedar Grove Elementary School. Each classroom was transformed into a different country. Students in all grade levels traveled to 7 different countries aboard the “Cedar Grove Airlines.” In each classroom students learned about the traditions, language, culture, and holidays of that particular country which aligns directly with the Common Core and NC Essential Standards. More ...

NASH COUNTY -- Led by three players and three coaches, Nash County boasted a distinct flair at the annual Powerade North Carolina State High School Level Baseball Games.
The event was held last weekend at several locations in Winston-Salem, including B,B&T Park.

Wesleyan will host FB camp
ROCKY MOUNT -- North Carolina Wesleyan College will host its 2012 Youth Football Camp from July 16-20.
The event will be held at the NCWC Football Practice Field on the corner of Fenner and Bishop Roads.
Times will be from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. each day. Cost is $135, which includes a snack.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Birchwood County Club opened its 2012 Nash-Halifax Swim League schedule last Thursday with a road trip to Westridge.
The host Westridge squad was a 541-210 overall winner.
