The former police chief for the City of Washington has been named the Interim Police Chief for the Town of Nashville.
Glenn Reed will start as Nashville’s Interim Chief next Monday, July 2.
Reed will replace Bill Creech, whose last day will be Friday, June 29. Creech served with Nashville’s Police Department for over 30 years and was the Police Chief for eight years. More ...

A middle school reassignment plan was presented to the Nash-Rocky Mount School Reassignment Committee on Monday afternoon.

Castalia set for July 4th
Castalia’s Fourth of July parade will be extra special this year, as it will pay tribute to three local World War II veterans.

Town of Castalia presents budget
Castalia commissioners held a public hearing last Thursday to discuss a preliminary budget for the coming fiscal year. However, no citizens took part in the public hearing. Commissioners unveiled a roughly $223,000 budget for the coming year based on declining expected revenues from local sales tax.
The proposed budget calls for a $22,000 lump sum loan payoff to the USDA Rural Center. More ...

EOG tests show little progress
School Superintendent Dr. Anthony Jackson revealed the newest preliminary student performance summary at the school board work session on Monday, June 26, and the overall report card shows a flat performance, particularly on the elementary levels. Jackson said since a new accountability system was currently being implemented in the state, the fallout for these scores would be different than in past years. However, the current scores will be used as a baseline measure by which to judge progress in the future. More ...

Breast cancer initiative receives grant funding
The Komen NC Triangle Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure has just invested another $1.1 million dollars in 19 community organizations through its Community Health funding program.  The awarded funding will address the local need for breast health services through breast cancer education, screening, treatment support services, post-diagnostic care, genetic testing for high risk women, angel funds, exercise therapy and support groups for women and men who are uninsured or underinsured in our community.

 The Honeywell Running Team has donated its winnings from the Eastern Carolina Road Race Series to the American Red Cross in support of the Ride for the Red Bicycle Ride scheduled for Aug. 11. The runners are employed at the Honeywell facility in Rocky Mount. Proceeds from the bicycle ride will go to Red Cross Disaster Services in eastern North Carolina. More ...

City of Rocky Mount to use old RMHS facility
As the Nash-Rocky Mount School System finalizes construction of the new Rocky Mount High School, plans for the old facility are falling into place. Mark Strickland, Special Assistant for Auxiliary Services announced at the Monday workshop session that the school system and the City of Rocky Mount had met several times to develop a plan that would allow the city to use two gyms and a classroom at the existing Rocky Mount High School campus in order to increase their offerings of teen programs to the area youth. More ...

OIC receives $650,000 federal grant from Reynolds Trust
The Opportunities Industrialization Center, Inc. in Rocky Mount will receive $650,000 in federal dollars to serve more patients and create local jobs, according to an announcement recently by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The grant is part of the federal effort to expand community health centers around the country. According to HHS, the grants were awarded to 219 health centers nationwide and will improve access to care for more than 1.25 million patients. More ...

Everyone had a great week at Vacation Bible School last week at Red Oak Baptist Church.  Children in Preschool through 5th grade  enjoyed the Amazing Wonders Aviation theme which was emphasized through Bible study, missions, crafts, recreation, and music.  For the mission project the children brought various items such as toiletry items, macaroni and cheese, ramen noodles, lip balm, stuffed animals, cars, dolls, coloring books, crayons, and many others. More ...
