Nash Health Care approves budget
The Nash Health Care Board approved its 2013 budget at its December 6 regular meeting.
The budget includes an operating income of $5.4 million, a net income of $13.3 million, a $46.7 million capital plan and a cash flow of $14.1 million.
The net income is a little over $7 million less than what was projected for 2012 but Al Hooks, Chief Financial Officer for Nash Health Care Systems, told board members the difference was mainly due to a decline in investment earnings. More ...

State issues report cards to NRMS
Last school year, North Carolina public school students in grades 3-8 were required by the NC Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) to take end-of-grade (EOG) tests in reading and math. Additionally, students in grades 5 and 8 were required to take EOG tests in science. Students enrolled in Algebra I, English I, and Biology were also required to take end-of-course (EOC) tests in those subjects. More ...

CANDY MAKING –– Isidro Amonte mixes the color and flavor into a sample batch of Lemon Buds. Amonte worked at Butterfields for 20 years before it closed down a few years ago and new owner Dena Manning hired him back when she bought the company.

Butterfields Candy is being re-introduced to the world after going on a hiatus for several years.
Dena Manning and her family purchased the Nashville company, which was known as Sweet Concepts, earlier this year and have been working to bring back the popular candy.
The candy is back in reproduction, just in time for the holiday season, Manning said. More ...

Nashville man questions tractor trailer ordinance
A Nashville resident spoke to Nashville’s Town Council recently with concerns about the town’s ordinance on tractor trailers parking on town streets.
Ernest Hannah, who lives in Nashville, said he is a truck driver and was parking his tractor trailer on a street by Atlantic Natural Foods. Hannah said he wasn’t blocking any streets or businesses and didn’t understand why he was told he couldn’t park there. More ...

Nash residents recently returned from a trip to New York City, where they were able to spend a day sightseeing but also had the opportunity to give to those affected by Hurricane Sandy.
Over 150 people departed Nashville on December 7 for New York City on a red-eye bus trip as part of a fundraiser for Nash County 4-H. The bus traveled through the night and arrived in New York City on Saturday morning, December 8. More ...

Adcock sentenced for drug trafficking
A Rocky Mount convicted felon was sentenced last month to 153 months in prison for his role in drug trafficking.
Senior United States District Judge Malcolm J. Howard sentenced Phillip Dwayne Adcock, 45, to 135 months imprisonment followed by eight years supervised release.

Cumulus Media Networks talk host Phil Valentine’s film, An Inconsistent Truth, picked up the Best Documentary award recently at the Nevada Film Festival in Las Vegas.  The movie is a humorous and fact-filled answer to Al Gore’s movie.

RMA students are semi-finalists for scholarship
Three members of the Rocky Mount Academy Class of 2013 have been selected as semifinalists for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship to UNC-Chapel Hill.
The Morehead-Cain is the oldest, most prestigious scholarship program in the United States, and these three students, from a class of just 31 students, shone through among hundreds around the world who were nominated.

Electric Club creates holiday light show at Nash Ag Center
The 4-H Electric Club has created an intriguing, synchronized holiday music and light show for the 2012 Christmas season. The public is invited to view this new show at the Nash Ag Center in Nashville from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. every night through Tuesday, December 25.
Visitors can hear the music for the show on their car radios as they watch the lights in action. Admission is free, and the club asks everyone to stop by! More ...
