Boice-Willis opens new facility

Doctors at Boice-Willis Clinic in Nashville are excited about their new office space on Eastpointe Avenue, behind the State Employees Credit Union.
The new facility opened on January 6 and Nashville’s Chamber of Commerce celebrated the opening with a ribbon cutting on Friday, January 17.

Castalia man shot during home invasion

A home invasion on Sunday night led to a Castalia man getting shot at his home.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, four black males kicked in the door of a home in the 10000 block of Lancaster Store Road around 8:41 p.m. on Sunday, January 19.
Ortiz Bazan-Trinidad was at home when the men entered the home, allegedly shot him multiple times and demanded money.

Celebrating the legacy of Dr. King

The doors are wide open for youth today, thanks to the efforts of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, Linda Woolard told over 100 who attended a breakfast on Monday in honor of Dr. King’s birthday.
Woolard was the guest speaker for the annual event, which is hosted by the Nashville Willing Workers.
Woolard, a Nashville resident, spoke of her experiences working with Dr. King’s family in Atlanta, Georgia.

Locals remember “Nell” Liverman

The Nashville community is mourning the loss of Flora “Nell” Liverman, who passed away last Thursday at the age of 86.
Liverman was best known for her service at Boice Willis Clinic in Nashville. She worked alongside her husband, Dr. Joseph Liverman for over 50 years.
Barbara Boulden worked 20 of those years with the Livermans and said Mrs. Liverman was one of a kind.

Former owner returns to Nashville Diner

After a year hiatus, Tammy Davis has returned to the Nashville Diner.
Davis owned and operated the restaurant for 13 years before selling it in December 2012 due to health issues.
Davis said after getting the okay from her doctor to return to work part-time, she started working just a few hours a day helping the new owners out.

Animal Shelter is open for adoptions

The Nash County Animal Shelter is back to normal operations after temporarily halting adoptions due to illness.
Several animals in the shelter were reportedly ill earlier this month, causing the shelter to cease adoptions until the shelter was able to take necessary precautions.
The illnesses reportedly included distemper and kennel cough.

Telethon to benefit Christian Fellowship Home

A telethon to benefit the Christian Fellowship Home for Recovering Men in Rocky Mount is being held on January 26, 2014 fom 1 until 5 p.m. on WHIG-TV.
The Christian Fellowship Home for Recovering Men in Rocky Mount serves as a temporary home for recovering alcoholics and addicts, helping to provide them with a safe environment where they can begin to put their lives back together and become self-sufficient, contributing members of the community again.

Investigation nets nine drug, firearm arrests

Two Nashville residents were among those arrested last week by the Nash County Sheriff’s Office as part of an ongoing investigation into the distribution of illegal controlled substances and illegal firearm possession in the area.
Deputies arrested a total of nine individuals on January 14 as part of the investigation.
Among those arrested were Montrel A. Gardner, 26, of Brake Street, Nashville.

Governor Pat McCrory recently appointed Virginia Brewer to the North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service.
The commission encourages and recognizes community service and volunteer participation as a means of community and state problem-solving.

The Women in Action of Red Oak Baptist Church met on Thursday, January 16 at the church.  They enjoyed fellowship and learning and doing missions.  The group made “Dog Booties” to be sent to North American missionary, Brenda Crim, who serves in Alaska.  The “Dog Booties” are similar to the real ones the sled dogs wear in the Ididirod Race.

Peachtree folks gathered at the church on a beautiful but chilly morning.  Sanctuary flowers were given by Lynn and David Griffin.  Pastor Whitehouse greeted those present.  His sermon was titled  ”Come In and Do Your Work in Me”.  It was based on I Samuel  25.  It recounts an incident in David’s life when he was justly angry.  But rather than take revenge, he left the matter in God’s hands.

UDC Bethel Heroes 636 and SCV Robert Henry Ricks Camp 75 held their first annual Robert E. Lee/Stonewall Jackson Luncheon on January 18, 2014.  The event was held at the Birchwood Country Club with over 60 guest attending.
Guest speaker, Mr. Russell Woodburn, curator at the Violet Bank Museum, spoke on a personal side of Confederate  General Robert E. Lee’s life.

Looking forward to some brotherly love

If there’s anything worse than having one mobile little boy, it’s having two mobile little boys.
Corbin is two and a half now so mobile is probably not even the right word for him. He’s way past the mobile stage. He’s now into the know-it-all, into everything stage. But on top of being mobile, he also talks! That’s been interesting!
Devin is one. He is walking and extemely fast! He can get into trouble and be on the other side of the room before you can even get to him to tell him no!

Dr. and Mrs. Liverman were indeed a team

Friday was bittersweet as we stood in front of the brand new Boice-Willis facility preparing to cut the ribbon celebrating its recent opening at Eastpointe Avenue. We had learned early Thursday morning of the passing of Dr. Joseph Liverman’s wife, Nell.
Dr. Liverman retired from Boice-Willis in 2011, but most of us still referred to the clinic on Church Street as “Dr. Liverman’s Office.”

Karen Dent-Haywood does it all!  She is an extraordinary Shelter pet photographer.  She fosters Shelter pets as the transition from Shelter to Rescue.  Recently she fostered an emaciated  dog ready to give birth, until she and her babies were ready to leave for their Rescue.   She also helps with transporting pets to vets, just to name one of several things she does.  Her heart is big and we appreciate her volunteering with the Nash County Animal Friends.  She ROCKS!

LOUISBURG -- While helping build homes to supplement his income as a teenager, Thomas Winstead learned the true value of a solid foundation.
“If the foundation of the house is just a little off, it’s not going to be right,’’ Winstead said.
That’s a lesson Winstead conveyed to a captive audience last Wednesday at the Louisburg College Scholar-Athlete Awards Ceremony.

Hot Stove ceremony targeted

RALEIGH -- The 64th Annual Raleigh Hot Stove League Banquet will be held Jan. 28 at the McKimmon Center on the campus of North Carolina State University.
Cost is $35 per person, which includes dinner. Tickets for a table of eight are $350.
Action will begin with a silent auction at 5:15 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m.

Wesleyan hosts conference opponents

ROCKY MOUNT -- Senior Josh Morrison averaged 24.5 points per game over two contests last weekend, leading his North Carolina Wesleyan College men’s basketball team to a USA South Conference split in Everett Gymnasium.
He began with a 25-point showing in Friday night’s dominating 86-63 win over Covenant, then ended with a solid 24-point outing in Saturday’s heartbreaking 72-69 loss to league-leading Maryville.

Canes split matchups at home

RALEIGH -- The Carolina Hurricanes split a pair of weekend National Hockey League home games  against teams from the Sunshine State. 
The “Canes downed the Florida Panthers 3-2 last Saturday as Alexander Semin led the way with two goals.
Riley Nash opened the scoring in the second period as he chipped a rebound past Panthers’ goalie Tim Thomas.
