Nash County nixes convenience fee

Nash County Commissioners have decided against charging municipal residents a fee to use convenience centers.
Commissioners met in a special budget work session on Friday afternoon to discuss several items within the proposed budget. One topic of discussion was the $25 annual fee for municipal residents Commissioners initially agreed on in March.

Nashville unveils budget plan with no tax increase

Nashville Town Manager Preston Mitchell unveiled the town’s budget last Tuesday evening during the board’s regular meeting and commissioners met again on Monday morning to further discuss the budget in detail.
The budget is balanced at around $8.6 million and includes no increase in the property tax rate, leaving the rate at 56 cents per $100 of valuation.

Middlesex citizens speak out at public meeting

Middlesex residents are continuing to question the mayor and town board during the public comment section of the town’s meetings.
On Monday night, Becky Strickland questioned why the town did not have a code of conduct.
Strickland said state legislature passed a law in 2009 requiring all local governments to have one in place by December 2010. She said she was told Middlesex did not have a Code of Conduct in place.

BLOOMING FESTIVAL

The 18th annual Blooming Festival brought thousands to Downtown Nashville to enjoy food, fun and entertainment for several days.
The carnival kicked off on Wednesday and had good crowds from the time it opened until the time it closed.
Entertainment got started on Thursday night with Mac Arnold and Plate Full O’Blues, who performed to a crowd at Nash Arts.

Nash Central High School will present “The Music Man” May 15th and 16th at 7 p.m. and May 17th and 18th at 2 p.m. at the Imperian Centre. “The Music Man” is set in Iowa in 1912. Harold Hill, played by Andrew Beal (at left), is a salesman who comes to cheat the town with his scam of creating a kids band.

Town of Castalia approves new zoning revisions

Castalia Commissioners spent over an hour last Tuesday reviewing revisions to the town’s zoning ordinances, primarily ones concerning the powers of the board of adjustment. The revisions were presented by Lee Nichols, a Community Development Planner with the NC Department of Commerce.
Nichols said that he had been working with the Castalia Planning Board on the revisions because some of the 2013 updates to the NC General Statutes affect local municipal statutes as well.

Nashville’s Police Chief Tom Bashore recently graduated from an administration course at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Bashore was one of 94 officials who graduated from the 2013-2014 Municipal Administration Course, which his offered by the School of Government.

Middlesex Board works on budget preparations for FY 2014-2015

The Town of Middlesex plans to unveil its proposed budget for the 2014-2015 fiscal year at a special meeting later this month.
Mayor LuHarvey Lewis said budget preparations were still under way. Commissioners held a budget retreat last week to discuss budget items and discussed several more on Monday night, during the board’s regular meeting. Items discussed included health insurance and police cars.

June Atkinson defends public schools at Rocky Mount event

Dr. June Atkinson, State Superintendent of North Carolina Public schools, recently spoke to the local League of Women voters about the effects that current state legislation is having on the administration of public school goals. The event was held at the Booker T. Washington Theatre in Rocky Mount on April 26. Nash-Rocky Mount Superintendent Anthony Jackson and Edgecombe County Superintendent John Farrelly were also in attendance and took part in a panel discussion following Atkinson’s speech.

Nash student honored as Buckley Scholar at UNC

The 10th class of UNC Buckley Public Service Scholars were honored on May 9 at a special ceremony at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Graduates received a Carolina blue and white cord to wear at commencement, which was held on May 11 to represent their achievement.

Air Force Airman Tyasia L. Cooper graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

NEER announces 2014 award finalists

B. Mayo Boddie, Sr., Chairman of the NorthEastern Entrepreneur Roundtable (NEER) has announced the names of the four finalists for the organization’s 2014 Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

The folks at Peachtree Church paid great homage to its ‘Mothers’ on Sunday.  To begin the day, the men of the church served a sumptuous breakfast to all of the mothers and their guests.  It was like a ‘five star’ restaurant meal.
Pastor Whitehouse’s sermon was titled “7 Ways to Love Your Mother.”  It was based on scripture from John 19: 26-27.

Our choir sang “She Will Be Called Blessed” for the call to worship. Pastor Ronnie welcomed everyone and prayed the prayer of invocation. Hymns of worship were “Faith of Our Mothers” and “Happy the Home.” Kenneth Parker prayed the morning prayer.
After receiving of tithes and offerings, everyone sang the doxology and greeted one another. Our choir sang “Family of God” for their special.

May is Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month, a time to focus on the disease and ways to support the search for a cure.
According to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, more than 30,000 children and adults in the US have Cystic Fibrosis and 1,000 new cases are diagnosed each year and 70,000 people worldwide are affected. 
The fight continues.

Budgets, budgets –– at least they’re talking!

It’s budget season, which for public officials across Nash County, means lots of meetings.
It means lots of meetings for me as well.
Budgets tend to throw me for a loop each and every year. It’s really hard to function this time of year when you’re covering five different boards and their budgets.

Thankful for local commitment and leadership

It’s hard to believe we just wrapped up the Nashville Chamber of Commerce’s  18th Blooming Festival. Time sure flies when you’re having fun!
I was looking through some old photo albums of the festival Sunday night noticing that many of the original organizers and volunteers are still working hard every year planning the event. Such commitment is hard to find these days. Some might think planning the event comes easy after 18 years, but actually it’s still challenging and we’re never too old to learn new things.

THE FITTING FINISH

NASH COUNTY -- The Big East Conference regular season in softball was one of the most wacky, parity-filled campaigns in recent years.
So why did anyone think the league tournament would play out any differently?
The Big East Tourney provided a fitting finish to the spring as Southern Nash appeared to be on the verge of reaching the finals -- only to be foiled by a late surge from Wilson Fike during a semifinal matchup last Thursday evening in Stanhope.

Northern dropped in tournament finals

RED OAK -- Two schools of diamond thought accompany the Northern Nash Knights into the first round of the Class 3-A State Baseball Playoffs.
The young Knights, with only one senior, have shown plenty of poise while winning a handful of tight games down the stretch. That effective work helped Northern Nash win the Big East Conference regular season crown under first-year head coach Leonard Allen.

Hill, Northern Nash’s standout senior guard, has been selected to take part in the annual East-West All-Star Girls Basketball Game.

Merritt fuels Carolina win

SALEM, VA. -- Ryan Merritt became the first Carolina League pitcher to reach five wins on Sunday afternoon and the Carolina Mudcats survived a furious comeback from the Salem Red Sox to win 7-5 at LewisGale Field inside Salem Memorial Ballpark.
The Mudcats (18-15) salvaged a series split by winning the final two of the set and finished the road trip 5-2.

Stars shine at regionals

SWANSBORO -- Nash Central’s Damian Silver will lead a healthy contingent of Nash County standouts into this Friday’s Class 3-A State Track and Field Championships at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro.
Silver claimed first place in the Boys 110 Hurdles (14.70) and 300 Hurdles (38.24) while helping the Bulldogs to a fifth-place team finish at the Class 3-A East Regional event at Swansboro High School.

Drake takes over for Knights

RED OAK -- Northern Nash High School has named Henry Drake as its new Boys Varsity Basketball Head Coach. 
Drake is currently serving at NNHS as a history teacher and will begin his duties as the coach immediately. He also coaches tennis.
“We are excited about the future of Northern Nash High School Boys Varsity Basketball Team with Coach Drake as the leader,” said Angela Miller, Director of Athletic Activities for Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools.
