Drug bust nets eight arrests

Two Nashville residents were among eight arrested last week during an on-going campaign targeting drug dealers in the area.
The Nash County Sheriff’s Office seized prescription pills, cocaine, marijuana, heroin and a firearm during the arrests last week.

5K RACE –– Close to 200 runners participated in the first annual Fruit of the Spirit 5K race on Saturday. The race was sponsored by the Town of Red Oak and Red Oak United Methodist Church.
Red Oak 5K Race helps youth in need

A mission to help youth in need led to the first ever 5K race in Red Oak.
The Fruit of the Spirit 5K Fun Run was held on Saturday morning with close to 200 runners participating.
The race was sponsored by Red Oak United Methodist Church and the Town of Red Oak but several other local churches and businesses supported the event as well.

NNHS Class of ‘94 honors fallen soldier

Northern Nash High School’s Class of 1994 will kick off its 20-year reunion by remembering a former classmate who was killed in 2009 supporting Operating Enduring Freedom.
Tara Whitaker Smith was killed on August 8, 2009 in Afghanistan. Though Nicole Rizzo went to school and graduated with Tara, she said she didn’t have classes with her or even know her all that well.

School Board sets O.R. Pope Committee

At the last Nash-Rocky Mount school board meeting held on October 6, school board members voted to appoint a new committee to help decide the fate of the former O.R. Pope Elementary school, which closed earlier this year due to health and safety issues at the school. The decision to close the historic school brought on a firestorm of controversy in the community and raised charges of racial prejudice, as well as bias against schools in the Edgecombe County portion of the school system.

Nash Health Care faces economic woes

Members of the Nash UNC Health Care Board met earlier this month to discuss major changes in the hospital’s economic situation including the pulling of over $100 million from a major investment firm and the continuing loss of revenues at a greater pace than projected. The news was presented at a meeting of the Nash UNC Health Care Board held on October 2.

When the volleyball team at Southern Nash Middle School takes the court on Monday, October 27, they will have on a different uniform, a uniform showing their support for a fellow classmate battling cancer.
This year’s annual Dig Pink game is in honor of that student and all money raised is going to help the student and the family with medical expenses.

CTE Open House set for Oct. 21

NC DOT to close portion of Country Club Road through October 31

The N.C. Department of Transportation will close a section of Country Club Road from Hunter Hill Road to U.S. 64 Business/Buck Leonard Boulevard in Rocky Mount the afternoon of Monday, Oct. 20, through Friday, Oct. 31. The closure is necessary to perform unforeseen sewer work on the widening project currently taking place along Country Club Road.

Rocky Mount Police Department to host Gun Buyback Program

The City of Rocky Mount Police Department is hosting its annual Gun Buyback program on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. or until funds are exhausted.
According to Cpl. Michael Lewis, public information officer for the City of Rocky Mount Police Department, the gun buyback program is a safe, no questions asked way to remove guns from your home.

Ridgecrest Worship Center to celebrate 90th anniversary

The early history of the Ridgecrest Worship Center began with a small group of people assembling in their homes.  They soon rented a tin garage located on the corner of Nashville Road and Maple Street.  There were regular services and many revivals with different preachers until the church was organized in November 1924.

Inspirational businessman, Kenny Moore, was the special guest and featured speaker last week at a luncheon meeting at the DoubleTree Hotel of the Rotary Club of Rocky Mount.
He described how he was the regional manager for a chain of restaurants but was fired because his employer developed financial problems in the recession of 1991 even though the restaurants he managed were profitable...

It was with some sense of counterpoint I felt necessary to comment on the October 9th  opinion, “...afraid to take a stand?”
Regarding the comments in this mode, there is an agenda that claims to be “party neutral” but actually ignores things in critique. I believe “we stand up” quite often for things we pay - but could take a pass on.

Or maybe the pet has behavior issues that will require a lot of effort on their part. The fact is that most of the pets are in fantastic condition with wonderful personalities. The shelter has a constantly changing group of pets of all ages, and each week there are new dogs and cats.

ROCKY MOUNT -- After an unforgiving non-league schedule, things weren’t expected to get any easier for the Nash Central High School football squad when the Bulldogs began their Big East Conference slate last Friday night against backyard rival Rocky Mount.
That assessment proved to be correct as the Bulldogs remained winless with a 42-0 setback against Rocky Mount at The Dawg Pound on the NCHS campus.

NASHVILLE -- A rare rebuilding year for the Nashville Hornets’ varsity football team is down to its final matchup.
The Hornets staged their home finale last Saturday morning and were defeated by long-time rival SouthWest Edgecombe by a 45-0 margin at The Hornets Nest at Glover Park.
One of the bright spots for the game was the fact that several former players were on hand as part of the organization’s annual gridiron homecoming festivities.

Big East girls tennis tournament staged

WILSON -- Rocky Mount’s Chandler Brice and Eliza Fike came up with a doubles championship during last Thursday’s final day of the Big East Conference Girls Tennis Tournament.
The annual event was held at the Barton College Courts in Wilson County.
In the finals, Brice and Fike defeated Wilson Fike’s Liz Short and Kate Hanson by a score of 6-1, 6-1.

WILSON -- The final Big East Conference girls golf match this fall was held under beautiful conditions Monday at Wedgewood Country Club in Wilson County.
Southern Nash senior Alexis Barrett starred on the day and earned medalist honors with a strong 82 -- one shot better than Wilson Fike’s Meri Harris.

LAGRANGE, GA. -- Sophomore quarterback Dustin Midgett threw for a program-record six touchdown passes last Saturday afternoon to lead his North Carolina Wesleyan College Battling Bishops to their third straight win, 48-21, at LaGrange College.
In addition to topping Wesleyan’s record book, his six TDs tied the USA South record for TD passes in a game.

STANHOPE -- Southern Nash boys soccer coach Kurt Bienias had high hopes that his Firebirds could achieve a victory Monday against rival Rocky Mount -- and take a key step toward qualifying for the four-team Big East Conference Tournament.
Rocky Mount had edged SN earlier in the season, but the Firebirds had the majority of the possession time, which gave Bienias cause for optimism.
