COPS AND KIDS CHRISTMAS

Nashville's Police Department helped make Christmas brighter for 30 local youth last week.
Police Officers, along with Nashville firefighters and deputies with the Nash County Sheriff's Office, took 15 youth shopping at Nashville's Wal-Mart on Friday morning as part of the department's annual Cops and Kids Christmas.

Nashville ministry gives away bikes

A local ministry put smiles on area children's faces Saturday, as close to 30 bikes were given away for Christmas.
The Helping Hands Outreach Ministry presented the bikes to youth on Saturday as part of its monthly giveaway program.
Anne Richardson, along with family and friends, started the ministry around two years ago

Nashville Fire Chief retires

Randy Goodbrod was born into the fire department.
His father started a volunteer department in a small town in Pennsylvania where he grew up. Goodbrod said he remembers spending a lot of time at the department.
"I would say I was born into it," Goodbrod said. "I probably spent every weekend at the department."

Local industry reopens, announces expansion project

Atlantic Natural Foods (ANF) celebrated the reopening of their Nashville facility last Wednesday, December 13 during a special ribbon cutting ceremony.
Nashville's Chamber of Commerce participated in the ribbon cutting, along with Nashville Mayor Donald Street and Nashville Council Members as well as representatives from Governor Cooper's office and other dignitaries.

Nashville Public Works Director retires

Larry Williams began his career with the Town of Nashville cutting grass.
Next week he will officially retire as the town's Director of Public Works.
Williams was born and raised in Nashville.
Williams said the former Public Works Director, Ed White, asked him to help cut grass for the town.

Local physician bikes across US

Since retiring from Boice Willis as a Rheumatologist in 2014, Dr. Nick Patrone has logged over 26,000 miles on his bicycle.
In a few months, Patrone will add a few thousand more to his log, as he participates in his fourth Bike the US for MS.
Patrone has worked with many Multiple Sclerosis, or MS, patients during his 25 years as a Rheumatologist with Boice Willis.

Industry expansion to create jobs in Edgecombe County

Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) will create 428 jobs over three years in North Carolina, Governor Roy Cooper recently announced, as the company locates a warehouse facility in Edgecombe County and plans an expansion of manufacturing operations in Durham.
Corning, a world leading innovator in materials science, will invest a total of $275 million between the two sites, with $86 million slated for Edgecombe County and approximately $189 million proposed for the Durham location.

Sheriff's Office captures man wanted in domestic

A Nash County man accused of chasing down his estranged wife and causing her to wreck turned himself in on Monday night.
According to a Nash County Sheriff's Office press release, a detective was driving down NC 581 near West Old Spring Hope Road near Spring Hope when they observed two vehicles approach an interesection and run a stop sign at a high rate of speed.

Nash announces holiday schedule for landfill, convenience centers

Nash County Health Director Bill Hill recently announced the upcoming holiday operating schedule for the Landfill and Convenience Centers.
The C&D Landfill located on Duke Road will be closed December 25th through 27th in observance of the Christmas holiday. It will be closed on January 1, 2018 for the New Year holiday.

Illegal poker establishment shut down in Castalia, near Louisburg

An illegal video poker establishment in Castalia was one of two establishments targeted by the Franklin County Sheriff's Office for an undercover operation.
The Franklin County Sheriff's Office and Alcohol Law Enforcement arrested eight people on drug, alcohol and gambling charges on December 15 as a part of "Operation Clean Sweep"

Momeyer Ruritans recognize members at banquet

A longtime member of the Momeyer Ruritan Club received the highest honor bestowed to Ruritans on Monday night.
Donald Edwards was presented the Tom Downing Award at the club's annual Christmas Volunteer Appreciation Banquet on Monday night.
Foundation Trustee and Secretary Corky Camin, along with Momeyer Ruritan member Stuart Parker, presented the award.
Camin said less than two percent of Ruritans receive the award.

Cedar Grove Elementary School Christmas Concert

Cedar Grove Elementary School held its Christ- mas Concert on December 12th featuring songs from around the world. Fourth grade students performed "Feliz Navidad." Third graders performed "My Dreidel." Fifth graders performed "O Tannenbaum." The Cedar Grove Chorus performed "African Noel," and "Mele Kalikimaka." All students joined together singing "We Wish you a Merry Christmas," as the finale.

Saint Augustine's University understands that we are living in an ever-changing technological society. As a result, the university has created an opportunity to increase the technology learning experience in the Eastern counties of North Carolina by offering a Digital Literacy Program. Rocky Mount man wins lottery

Every year for the rest of his life, 33-year-old DaQuawn Griffin of Rocky Mount will get a check for $25,000 after winning the second prize in the lottery's Lucky For Life game.
Griffin said he's "a big fan of the game" because he likes the "for life" prize the game offers and the odds for winning them. Griffin beat odds of one in 1.8 million to win the game's second prize in Thursday's drawing. He bought the $2 ticket at the Sharpsburg Grocery on South Hathaway Boulevard in Sharpsburg.

Middlesex man receives Purple Heart Award from NC Highway Patrol

Colonel Glenn M. McNeill Jr., Commander of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, and Erik A. Hooks, Secretary of the Department of Public Safety, presented several members and a retiree with awards in a ceremony last week, including to a Middlesex man.
The awards given included the State Highway Patrol Award of Valor, Purple Heart Award, Meritorious Service Award, Colonel's Appreciation Award, Samaritan Award, Tommy Cheek Award for Collision Reduction and the Humanitarian Service Award.

On a crisp, but sunny morning, Peachtree folks gathered for worship at the church. The feeling of Christmas was enhanced by the beautiful greenery and white poinsettias in the sanctuary, placed there by the Barnes/Allison wedding decorators and the Peachtree Christmas Committee.
This being the third Sunday of Advent, the Candle representing "Joy " was lit and the congregation joined in the advent reading.

How do you know and does it matter?

We were out of dog and cat food over the weekend, and while I was out running errands, I stopped with my sons at a local discount store for dog and cat food.
We stood in line to check out, which should have taken only a moment, but the lady in front of me was struggling with the credit card terminal. She swiped and swiped and simply could not properly follow the clerk's instructions.

Five years ago today, I gave birth to Devin. Devin is our middle boy.

Knights Name Farriss

RED OAK -- Northern Nash High School has named Andrew Farriss as its new Varsity Head Football Coach.
Farriss is currently providing instruction to students as a Math teacher and he is also certified in Health and Physical Education.
He will begin his coaching duties immediately and will transition into the Physical Education department at the beginning of the second semester on January 24, 2018.

RED OAK -- For the first time in the 2017-2018 season, the Northern Nash Knights and the Rocky Mount Gryphons took the court against one another in the championship game of the annual Nash County Boys Basketball Christmas Tournament last Friday night at the NNHS Gymnasium.
Just like last year's Big East Conference Championship semifinal, the Knights would fall to their arch-rival in a nail-biter, this time by a score of 90-78 in overtime.

NASHVILLE -- Red Oak Middle School's performance against rival Nash Central on Monday typified its season to date in boys basketball action.
The Tigers got off to a quick start -- just like their overall record boasts -- and went on to defeat the host Trojans by a 43-30 margin in Tri-County Conference action at the NCMS Gymnasium.

Wesleyan secures hoops victories

ROCKY MOUNT -- A pair of double-doubles from senior KeChae Parker and junior Robert Wilson helped North Carolina Wesleyan College's basketball squads tally a two-game sweep last Saturday at Everett Gym on the NCWC campus.
Parker poured in 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to help the Bishop women secure a 75-65 non-conference victory over Virginia Wesleyan, while Wilson's 12 points and 11 boards paced the men in a 91-75 win over USA South foe Greensboro College.

RM Soars In SWAC

ROCKY MOUNT -- The Rocky Mount Parks and Recreation Department's Hot Shot Soccer 14-U All-Star Team kicked it into high gear recently, winning the 2017 Statewide Athletics Committee (SWAC) State Soccer Tournament for its age bracket.
Each fall, the SWAC sponsors a state soccer tournament that brings in teams from across North Carolina.
