Traffic island to be installed in downtown

A traffic island will be placed on Washington Street, in front of Drake Street, as part of the Nash County Detention Center expansion project.
The jail expansion has been talked about for years and various town meetings have been held regarding how it will affect travel throughout nearby streets.
In order to expand the detention center, a portion of Elm Street will be closed permanently.

HALLOWEEN CRAFT DAY

Local kids attended the Teacher Workday Camp on Friday at Nashville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources located in downtown Nashville.
Pictured above, Lily Johnson makes a craft using pretzels and cookies.
The event is one of many new programs offered by the town at its new recreation facility at 108 S. Boddie Street.

Town cites neglected properties

Nashville's Planning Department continues to move forward with derelict properties in town.
Code Enforcement Officer Shawn Lucas presented three more properties to town council members on Tuesday night for consideration of demolition.
In his agenda report, Lucas said numerous complaints had been received from neighboring residents and property owners about the homes, located at 206 N. Boddie Street, 102 Arrowood Drive and 208 Vale Street.

Newspaper columnist releases book

A Time in the Land: The Best of the Soap Box is the latest book out from Nash County author Michael K. Brantley. This offering is a collection of his best award-winning newspaper columns from The Nashville Graphic over the last nearly quarter century.
"Mike has an incredible gift of storytelling while also the ability to take us back to our roots to remember times that are so influential and relevant to our lives today," wrote longtime Nashville Graphic Publisher Jo Anne Cooper in the book's foreword.

Graphic hires new staff reporter

The Nashville Graphic welcomes Kendra T. Jones as its newest full-time reporter.
Though her journalism background has mostly been focused in the broadcast arena, the opportunity to pursue the print aspect of journalism arose when Jones was hired by The Nashville Graphic as a freelance reporter in 2016 to cover the monthly Spring Hope Commissioners meetings.

Local youth earns Eagle Scout

A local boy scout has received the official title of "Eagle Scout," the highest honor bestowed upon scouts.
Hayden Cahoon, 17, was recognized during an Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony on Sunday, where he received the official title and insignia.
Cahoon is a Nashville native and has been a member of Nashville Troop 76 since he was in the first grade.

Nash celebrates National 4-H Week

The Nash County 4-H Clubs celebrated National 4-H Week from October 3 to October 9.
During 4-H Week, the county's 4-H Clubs partook in activities including a proclamation presented and approved by the Nash County Board of Commissioners, showing 4-H spirit, and highlighting 4-H alumni and volunteers daily.

An old warehouse located behind the Nashville Exchange in downtown Nashville is slated for demolition this week.
The structure, though tattered and worn, still holds a bit a history for Nashville once serving as the grocery room of the Jones May Company which was also at one time the Jones Sherrod Company.

Twin County Hall of Fame names nine 2021 inductees

The Twin County Community Pride, Inc. has announced nine new inductees representing Edgecombe and Nash counties to the 17th annual class of the Twin County Hall of Fame. The 2021 class includes seven men and two women of whom five are living and four will be inducted posthumously.
A formal induction ceremony and banquet will be held on Thursday, November 4th at the Rocky Mount Event Center to welcome the new inductees and their families. Advance tickets may be purchased at www.tchof.org. No tickets will be sold at the door. For more information, call 252-977-1438.

Red Oak to install new town sign

People driving through the town of Red Oak will soon see a different sign outside of town hall, an upgraded one.
Town Clerk Tracy Shearin said town hall is going to replace its sign that is directly outside of the building.
The sign will display the phrase "the town of Red Oak" along with community related information, such as events.

Resolution

Nash County Commissioners presented a resolution at their October meeting honoring the public service of former Nash County Commissioner Mary Wells who represented District 6 since 2009. Wells passed away on July 18th at the age of 84.

Nominations sought for agriculture award

N.C. Cooperative Extension of Nash County is now accepting nominees for its Agriculture Award. The award will be handed out at the Farm-City Week Celebration on November 23, 2021.

Nash County bridges to be replaced

A contractor will replace two bridges over Interstate 95 in Nash County and reconfigure Exit 145 to better handle commercial truck traffic.
The N.C. Department of Transportation awarded a $23 million contract to Barnhill Contracting Co. of Rocky Mount to replace these set of bridges: Swift Creek School Road (N.C. 33) bridge at Exit 150 and Watson Seed Farm Road overpass.

Local students named to honors list at SNHU

Tabitha Murphy of Castalia has been named to Southern New Hampshire University's summer 2021 President's List.
Eligibility for the President's List requires that a student accumulate an academic grade point average (GPA) of 3.7-4.0 and earn 12 credits for the term.
Elizabeth Alford of Nashville has been named to Southern New Hampshire University's summer 2021 Dean's List.

Governor announces appointments

Governor Roy Cooper recently announced appointments and nominations to North Carolina boards. Local appointments include:
Shawn Dwight Lucas of Bailey has been appointed as a public member to the Structural Pest Control Committee. Lucas is a member of Greater Wilson and Nash Rocky Mount Rotary Club. He currently serves as the Planner for the Town of Nashville.

RED OAK NEWS

Red Oak Baptist Church had a kick-off for Operation Christmas Child on Sunday, October 17. They had balloons, boxes, information pamphlets, and even a couple of "live" boxes who explained how to participate in this Samaritan's Purse ministry! The church goal is 300 boxes.
The Community Trunk or Treat will be Sunday, October 31 at Ennis Park. Festivities will begin at 6:00 pm and conclude at 7:30 pm.

Playground

St. John Missionary Baptist Church was presented with state of the art playground equipment by the Town of Red Oak. Rev. Herbert C. Scott held a special service on Sunday, October 10, to dedicate the playground equipment. Red Oak Mayor Levell Langley was in attendance along with several other town officials. Mayor Langley shared remarks recognizing the growth and impact witnessed in the Red Oak Community at St. John Baptist Church.

FARM MARKET SUMMARY OCTOBER 11-15, 2021

North Carolina's egg prices were lower on extra large and large, steady on the balance when compared to last week. Supplies of extra large were very heavy, medium moderate, while large were fairly light to meet a moderate demand. The North Carolina weighted average price quoted Thursday, October 14, for small lot sales of delivered, cartoned, grade "A" eggs was 139.61 for Extra Large, 133.47 for Large, 100.39 for Medium, and 75.00 for Small eggs.

Wonder if demolition will wake up old spirits

A somewhat historic piece of Nashville will be torn down this week. An old warehouse located behind the storefronts on Washington Street, which served many businesses for more than a century, has met the end of its journey.
Nashville Exchange restaurant owner Lisa Hattaway, who also owns the warehouse property, has gone far and beyond with no luck finding someone with the desire, and resources, to repurpose the bricks and wood from the building to at least make good use of some of Nashville's history.
