Major completes FBI Academy

Major Miste Strickland of the Nash County Sheriff's Office received an exclusive opportunity to complete training through the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
Strickland has been with the sheriff's office for 25 years and said she was hoping to participate in training at the FBI National Academy (FBINA) for 10 years.

OPENING DAY

Mounds of shoppers gathered for the grand opening of Nashville's first ever farmers market.
The Nashville Farmers Market opened April 22 at 723 South Barnes Street on the Nashville Junction property.
Michael Hurt, owner of the Nashville Junction, said he purchased the entire property over a year ago with initial plans to build apartments on it.

Senior Center earns national status

The Nash County Senior Center had a luncheon to celebrate its third national accreditation.
According to Nash County Senior Center supervisor Morgan Doughtie, the senior center received its first accreditation in 2010, again in 2015, and now in 2022.
The senior center was set to be nationally accredited in 2020 but Doughtie said COVID-19 put a lapse on that motion.

Master Gardeners annual plant sale is Saturday

Purchase all things horticulture at the Nash County Master Gardeners annual plant sale Saturday.
Matt Stevens, agriculture and horticulture agent at Nash County NC Cooperative Extension said the purpose of the plant sale is to support the educational activities of the master gardeners.

Run for the Roses Derby Day set for May 7th

The Boys & Girls Club of the Tar River Region is bringing a little slice of the Kentucky Derby to the Mills.
The organization is hosting its third annual Run for the Roses Derby Day on May 7 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Rocky Mount Mills Powerhouse.
There will be a live DJ and food including Derby-themed hors d'oeuvres, wine and beer.

Local teen remains hospitalized after single-vehicle crash

A Southern Nash High School student remains in the hospital after being electrocuted following a single-vehicle crash.
According to a report by Trooper C.A. Allen, Alexis Shania Harris of 10734 Seven Paths Road, Spring Hope, was heading north on Charlie Morgan Road in Franklin County the evening of April 16 when she rounded a curve at too high a rate of speed for the roadway.

NCWC unveils turf field, receives million dollar gift

On Thursday, April 21, North Carolina Wesleyan College celebrated the completion of phase one of its Sports Stadium and officially unveiled Stallings Field at the Vernon T. Bradley, Jr. Stadium. A highlight of the evening was a $1 million check presentation to the Campaign by Vernon T. Bradley, Jr. These funds made it possible for Wesleyan to construct a new turf field, install lighting and build additional parking.

The youth and children of Red Oak Baptist Church will be having a Lasagna Dinner on Friday, May 20 at 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm in the Family Life Center. Eat-in only. Tickets are $10 each. Meal includes lasagna, bread, salad, dessert, and tea or water. All funds will support the youth and children attending summer mission camps.

A three-step plan that has four steps

The hummingbirds are making their first appearance, the days are getting longer, and most of us in this part of world once again forget how much work a garden can be and start planting stuff.
Gardening seems like a great idea when it's finally 70 degrees outside and there aren't really any bugs and the garden boxes aren't full of weeds and thoughts of fresh vegetables are dancing in our heads.

It's certainly a different time!

Looking back to 1996 when planning the first Blooming Festival I recall about 20 of us sitting around the table hashing out details on note pads. Most of the details were hammered out face-to-face through sub-committees. All correspondence to participants was delivered through the US Mail.
Fast forward to the planning of 2022 - committees have met in person, via ZOOM and even by facetime.
