Nashville may opt out of partnership

The Town of Nashville is considering a switch to Nash County for its economic development services.
Town Council members heard a presentation from Nash County Economic Development Director Andy Hagy last Wednesday at a budget work session. Susan Phelps, Economic Development manager, Stacie Shatzer, Nash County manager, and Robbie Davis, Nash County Board chairman also attended the meeting.

Infant injured in drive-by shooting

Franklin County sheriff's deputies continue to look for a Castalia-area man they allege is responsible for two drive-by shootings, one that put an infant in the hospital.
Authorities are calling Christopher Charles Gupton a person of interest/potential suspect in the shooting incidents that took place in the 600 block of Vaiden Road on Saturday and Sunday.

Spring Hope man jailed for stolen guns

A Nash County man was arrested after authorities searched his home and found multiple guns and drugs.
The Nash County Sheriff's Office assisted Nashville Police Department Monday with the execution of a search warrant for a residence at 1580 Strawbush Court in Spring Hope.

Memorial Day service is held in Rocky Mount

A Memorial Day service was held on Monday at Jack Laughery Park in Rocky Mount.
The Joint Veterans Committee (JVC) of Nash and Edgecombe Counties hosted its annual Memorial Day event to commemorate soldiers who have lost their lives in combat and to celebrate the freedoms that were gained at the expense of their devotion to the country.

Nashville and Rocky Mount to switch disinfectants

On an annual basis since 2003, the Town of Nashville has temporarily used a different disinfectant in its water supply. A conversion to chlorine will begin Wednesday, June 21 and will last for up to 30 days to clear the system of ammonia, which can serve as potential food for certain types of microorganisms.
According to the American Water Works Association and the North Carolina Public Water Supply, switching to chlorine periodically is a recommended practice for water systems that use chloramine as a residual disinfectant.

American Legion Post 110 honors fallen soldiers

Nashville Police Chief Anthony Puckett grew up as most boys do, fascinated by the super heroes he read about or saw in the comics. But today, Puckett said his heroes are the men and women of the United States military, the ones who made the ultimate sacrifice. Puckett served as the guest speaker for the American Legion Post 110's annual Memorial Day ceremony, which was held on Sunday, May 29 at Forest Hill Cemetery.

Nash awards bid to local contractor

A bid has been awarded to a local contractor that will build the upcoming Nash County Pet Connection Center animal shelter.
Bids were opened in April and the lowest base bid the county has received was from R&L Builders out of Battleboro.
Nash County Director of Utilities and Facilities Jonathan Boone said R&L Builders built an animal facility in Wilson and assisted the county with construction of the Southern Nash Senior Center.

The Nashville Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for its 2022 educational scholarships. Funding for the scholarships is provided from advertising on the chamber's website.
To be considered for the scholarships, applicants are required to show proof of North Carolina residency and Nash County residency, provide a copy of high school transcripts, provide two letters of recommendation from a counselor, instructor, an employer or professional...

Suspect charged after delivering contraband to jail

Cedrick Charles of Roper was charged and placed under a $10,000 secured bond last week for delivering contraband to the Nash County Detention Center.
On May 25, members of the Nash County Sheriffs' Office Detention Staff received information that a subject may attempt to drop contraband off in an attempt to smuggle it into the Nash County Detention Center.

All-in-one celebration

Red Oak Elementary held an all-in-one celebration for Teacher Appreciation week, Cinco De Mayo and International Day on May 6. Teacher Appreciation week began May 2 and ended May 6. Guidance Counselor Dottie Cannon said lunch from a Mexican restaurant was ordered for teachers to enjoy. The luncheon was a part of celebrating Cinco De Mayo as well.

Our advocate group is not only Nash County Animal Friends of NC (NCAF), but we also have a sister site, Lost & Found PETS of Nash & Edgecombe Counties, NC (includes Rocky Mount). Nineteen sites passed the Swim Guide test last week in the Tar-Pamlico watershed -- a sign that it's safe to swim in local waters at this time.
Data was inconclusive or unavailable for an additional four sites: Woodstock Point at Belhaven, Plum Point and Bonner Point in Bath and Dinah's Landing at Goose Creek State Park.

NC Wesleyan becomes a university

On Friday, April 22 in a historic move, the North Carolina Wesleyan College Board of Trustees announced plans for the College to become North Carolina Wesleyan University. Since 2015, the College has been moving in this direction with the addition of its first two master's programs, a key component of being considered a university.

Castalia native earns degree

Isaiah Dwane Jones of Castalia, who received a Master of Management, is one of 168 Mars Hill University to receive degrees during its spring commencement ceremony on May 21, 2022. In addition to the bachelor's and master's degrees awarded, the university also presented an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree to Oralene Anderson Graves Simmons, who broke the color barrier at Mars Hill in the early 1960s.

Garden club holds annual event

The Rocky Mount Garden Club met on May 18 for its annual awards luncheon. President Dolores O'Keeffe welcomed the members who attended and thanked the hostesses of the event, Peggy Daughtridge, Connie Dupree, Patsy Pridgen, Pris Sykes, and Sarah Williams.
The club's annual budget was presented and approved. In other business, the club was informed that a $500 scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student at Nash Community College for the 2022-2023 academic year. A candle was lit in memory of deceased member Alice Walter.

North Carolina's egg prices were steady on small, lower on the balance when compared to last week. Supplies of extra large and large were very light, while medium were moderate to meet a moderate demand. The North Carolina weighted average price quoted Thursday, May 26, for small lot sales of delivered, cartoned, grade "A" eggs was 229.88 for Extra Large, 226.91 for Large, 209.67 for Medium, and 155.00 for Small eggs.

Fitness devices: Do we really need them?

Every morning when I put on my Apple Watch, within a few minutes it buzzes and the fitness app pops up to encourage me to "complete my rings" by walking a preset distance.
I don't really remember setting that up or even how far it is, but throughout the day, the watch will report to me if I'm behind or on pace. It uses phrases like "you can do it" or "you're almost there."

Hoping to track down a homerun with some baseball history

Apparently baseball was just as popular as it is now, if not more so, in the early 1900s right here in Nashville.
We've discovered there was a team named "Nashville Oaks" which was formed, coached and played here in town. Most of the players were from Red Oak. We do know the coach of the team in the early 20s was S.G. Griffin.
