Grant boosts high-speed internet growth

Nash County is one of five counties in North Carolina that will benefit from the distribution of Growing Rural Economies with Access to Technology (GREAT) grants to expand internet service across 69 counties across North Carolina.
NC Governor Roy Cooper recently announced recipients of $206 million in grants which includes CloudWyze, Inc., the internet provider which partnered with Nash County in 2018 to offer internet in underserved areas of the county.

Nash to shine more light on Arboretum

The Nash County Arboretum is one of Nash County's best kept secrets but Nash County Commissioners are hoping to let the secret out.
Commissioners heard a presentation from Matt Stevens, Horticulture Agent with Nash County Cooperative Extension, on Monday regarding the Nash County Master Gardeners.

"LONG HAUL"

A local singer-songwriter, Chandler James, has announced the release of his newest single, "Long Haul" which debuts Friday, September 23.
James recently moved to Nashville, Tennessee and continues to record under BelleFire Records. His brand-new single was penned by Steve Dorff, Cliff Downs, and Michael Logen and also produced by Steve Dorff.

County okays highway grant funding

The Nash County Sheriff's Office is beefing up its highway enforcement after receiving a Governor's Highway Safety Program grant.
Nash County Commissioners approved the grant funding on Monday during the board's monthly meeting.
Major Allen Wilson presented information on the grant, asking commissioners to fund the county's portion.

Nashville's very own George's BBQ Sauce is in the running for the Coolest Thing Made in NC contest.
George's gets third shot at Coolest in NC!

For the third year in a row, Georges's BBQ Sauce, made here in Nashville, has been nominated to be included in the Coolest Thing Made in NC contest. The contest is spearheaded by the NC Chamber of Commerce to celebrate the state's manufacturing community.
George's is one of 80 companies selected for this year's competition. The company made it to the top five the past two years.

A dedication ceremony will take place Friday, September 23 at 10 a.m. to celebrate the installation of our nation's Charters of Freedom at the Nash County Courthouse. The display includes our founding documents, the U.S. Constitution, Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights.

NCC celebrates 55th birthday

Nash Community College President Dr. Lew Hunnicutt, along with the Student Government Association, hosted students, faculty and staff at two campus-wide celebrations to honor the college's 55th birthday on September 7, 2022.
The North Carolina General Assembly passed the Community College Act in 1957 providing an avenue for local governing bodies to establish institutions in their own communities.

Nash County Arts Council opens applications for grant funds

The Nash County Arts Council is now accepting applications for North Carolina Arts Council Grassroots Arts Program subgrants through October 20th at 5p.m.
Since 1977, the North Carolina Arts Council's Grassroots Arts Program has provided North Carolina citizens access to quality arts experiences. Using a per capita based formula, the program provides funding for the arts in all 100 counties of the state through partnerships with local arts councils.

The Nash County Nickels for Know-How Referendum will be held on Thursday, November 17, 2022 at the Nash County Ag Center, 1006 Eastern Ave, Nashville, which will be the official polling location.
The referendum is being held to let users and producers of feed or fertilizer decide if they wish to continue the self-assessment program.

When I see an animal come into the Shelter with a big belly, I don't think pregnant (although sometimes it is), I think intestinal parasites. Hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms, giardia and coccidia are some of the more prevalent intestinal parasites that they can get. Roundworms are the most common one, babies can be born with them or ingest them with mother's milk.

The youth of Red Oak Baptist Church volunteered with Sleep in Heavenly Peace in Rocky Mount on Saturday, September 17. The 18 youth/parents helped to make 100 beds for children in the area who do not have beds to sleep on. Sleep in Heavenly Peace is an organization that works to see that every child has a safe place to sleep.

Bill and Patsy Marshburn established The Marshburn Family College Support Fund at Nash Community College as a demonstration of their commitment to educational opportunities in Nash County. The college announced last week the naming of a popular student support area on its campus as the Bill and Patsy Marshburn Advising and Success Center.

Wisdom teeth and the royal family woes

Last week was tough.
I had to have a couple of teeth extracted. Luckily for me, they were spares in the back end of what some in the past have referred to as my "big mouth."
One was a wisdom tooth. I only had two to start with and my childhood dentist, the venerable Dr. Mullen, used to tell me I was a product of evolution.
"You've only got two and they don't seem to be causing a problem, but we can get them anyway if you want," he told me. "It's your call."

Nashville's Halloween is shaping up to be a tradition

This photo was taken of Raley Chevrolet in downtown Nashville in 1958. The building later served as Nashville's Fire Department. The building was demolished in 1996 for the expansion of county offices. Nash County's Administration Office now sits on the property.
