Hospital is getting new name

ROCKY MOUNT - Nash UNC Health Care is in the process of becoming UNC Health Nash.
The hospital in Rocky Mount will begin to use the new name in January.
The entire UNC Health system re-branded back in February 2020.

Nashville bumps utility deposit by 100 percent

NASHVILLE - The Town of Nashville has increased its security deposit for new utility customers.
Council members approved increasing the security deposit from $100 to $200 last Tuesday night at the board's regular meeting.
Finance Director John O'Keefe brought the changes before the board.

Highway funding fixes sidewalks, sinkholes

NASHVILLE - Nashville is using state funds to repave roads around town and replace sidewalks near its elementary school while Spring Hope works to fix two street-damaging sinkholes.
The money comes from the N.C. State Highway Fund commonly referred to as the Powell Bill.

Early voting begins Oct. 20

Friday is the last day to register to vote on Election Day.
Anyone who doesn't register by the 5 p.m. deadline that day won't be able to cast a ballot on Nov. 8.
However, anyone can register and vote at the same time during early one-stop voting.

Town okays ornament buy for Christmas

NASHVILLE - The Town of Nashville is making plans for Christmas.
Council members last week took action to pave the way for the town's annual Downtown Christmas Celebration, slated for Saturday, December 3. As part of the celebration, some streets will be closed during the festivities. Council members unanimously approved the permit for the event and street closings.

MEET THE CANDIDATES

NASHVILLE - Everyone is invited to a meet and greet next week to talk with candidates running for offices that affect Nashville and Nash County.
The event is sponsored by the Nashville Chamber of Commerce and set for 5-7 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Nashville Parks and Recreation Center, 108 S. Boddie St.
"The election is right around the corner," said Chamber President Cliff Joyner.

Food pantry continues push for Momeyer location

MOMEYER -- A local real estate agent is encouraging town officials to reconsider its position on the relocation of a charitable food bank citing there is no better offer on the property that will fit the building as is.
A Touch of the Father's Love Ministry and Food Bank plans to move into the shuttered Bass Brothers IGA at 5193 Momeyer Way.

A display of giant watermelons wowed spectators Saturday in Spring Hope.
Giant pumpkins, watermelons and gourds galore!

SPRING HOPE -- Brandon Huber has been growing gourds since he was a child.
About 10 years ago the Raleigh resident got into growing giant gourds. That brought him to Spring Hope on Saturday where he won first place in the long gourd category with a 71.5-inch gourd at the third annual Spring Hope Giant Pumpkin and Watermelon Weigh-off, an event meant to accompany the Spring Hope National Pumpkin Festival, which was canceled this year due to weather.

Girl Scout donates 500 books to DSS

Rebekah Hunter, 14, of Rocky Mount, recently collected 500 books for the purpose of donating them to Nash County Social Services as part of earning the Girl Scout Silver Award.
The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn.

Spring Hope sees uptick of property crime

Spring Hope's chief executive says an uptick in brazen property crimes isn't due to fewer police officers on patrol.
"Crime statistics are up nationally," said Town Manager Andrew DeIonno.
Spring Hope saw three cases of theft in September including larcenies of bicycles breaking and entering along with the theft of construction tools and equipment, including a break-in of town property.

Fugitive captured after high-speed chase, crash

Nash County deputies arrested a fugitive from Rocky Mount after he allegedly crashed a rental car into a state trooper's cruiser during a high speed chase into Wake County last week.
Joe Albert Ashley Jr., 30, faces charges of fleeing to elude arrest and careless and reckless driving. He is wanted in Virginia and Maryland for probation and drug violations.

Man charged with shooting his caretaker

MIDDLESEX -- An elderly man is accused of shooting his caretaker then chasing the injured person down the street with a shotgun.
Ray Cameron, 82, faces a charge of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.
Authorities held Cameron on a domestic violence hold before allowing him to bond out of jail. He has a court date of Oct. 27 in Nash County District Court in Nashville.

Bible indicates paradise was once part of Hades

The Bible reports that sometime between his crucifixion and his resurrection, Jesus went to hell. In fact, Ephesians 4:9 says that Jesus "first descended into the lower parts of the earth". Why? The Bible says it was to set the captives free and to take the very keys to hell away from Satan. Otherwise, how could we ever claim to have victory over death?

Scholarship established in honor of local nurse

The Nash Community College Foundation has announced the recent establishment of the Nanoria C. Hilliard Memorial Nursing Scholarship by Jackie Avent and Building Up People, Inc.
The scholarship was established in memory of Avent's mother, Nanoria C. Hilliard, who was a nurse at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount for many years.

Hwy 55 employee Aryn Vickers delivers breakfast last Saturday's annual Nashville Lions Club fundraiser. On the menu were pancakes, sausage, bacon, milk and orange juice. The local civic club that has operated for more than 50 years, helping to buy glasses for the blind.

Studies are only opinions on the data gathered by the researcher

Parking in downtown Nashville has been a long discussed, debated and disputed issue for as long as I can remember. Only now, it's become a larger issue due to growth. Not only has our downtown grown with more retail customers shopping and dining, but so has county government which has placed bricks and mortar on much of its own parking.
