Momeyer nixes food bank option

Supporters of a food bank wanting to relocate to Momeyer threatened the wrath of God in a Hail Mary attempt to sway the town council on Monday.
Roger Warren, town resident and board member of A Touch of the Father's Love, has repeatedly promised legal action if the council doesn't allow the food bank to move into the old Bass Brothers building at 5193 Momeyer Way.

Town clerk is leaving Nashville

The Town of Nashville is looking for a new town clerk.
Town Clerk Sarah Tinkham is leaving her position on December 21 to take a job closer to home at an electric cooperative.
Tinkham has been with the Town of Nashville since October of 2020.

Gray keeps seat on School Board after runoff

Zack Gray will keep his seat on the Nash County Board of Education.
Gray defeated Kathy Hawk in a runoff earlier this week, the last election in the state for the year.
Gray received 462 votes or 61% to Hawk's 288 votes in the second election this cycle for the District 8 seat.

Man requests easement at park

A Rocky Mount man is requesting the Town of Nashville grant an easement for property his family acquired in 2020 behind Glover Park.
Kenneth Muhammad's family owns around 20 acres of land along the western border of Glover Park. The property is land locked with no public road frontage and no legal easement across an adjoining property.

Thaxton Rowland has been named the Oak Level Ruritan of the Year for his willingness to help do whatever needs doing. He was honored at the club's annual Volunteer Appreciation Banquet held Monday.
Rowland named Oak Level Ruritan of the Year

For the second time in three years, Thaxton Rowland has been named Oak Level's Ruritan of the Year.
"He does what needs to be done," Club President Kay Boone said of Rowland when presenting the award during Monday's annual Volunteer Appreciation Banquet.
Retired from Lamberts Cable Splicing Company in Rocky Mount, Rowland, 72, spends his time looking to give back to the community anyway he can.

Nash receives clean audit

Nash County has received a thumbs up for its fiscal year finances from independent auditors.
"We encountered no significant difficulties in dealing with management in performing and completing our audit," said Stuart Hill, an audit manager for the Whiteville-based firm of Thomas, Price, Scott, Adams and Company.

Flu cases worse this winter

Local public health officials are gearing up for a rough flu season.
"I do expect a tough January and February," said Bill Hill, director of the Nash County Health Department.
Influenza cases are surging across the southeast and increasing in North Carolina, including Nash County, Hill said.

Nash Central Navy Junior ROTC opens STEM Lab at high school

Nash Central High School and their Navy Junior ROTC unit announced the opening of their STEM Lab, located inside Nash Central High School, on Tuesday, December 13th, 2022.
The 2021 and 2022 Defense Authorization Acts included funding for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) training and education for all Junior ROTC units including the Navy, Air Force, and Army.

70TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

Gene and Eloise Holland celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on November 27, 2022. They were married on Thanksgiving day in 1952 in the home of Pete Bunn, Nashville Justice of the Peace. Mr. and Mrs. Holland recently revisited the home on 304 Washington Street in Nashville to reminisce of that special day. Mrs. Holland is the former Eloise Jeffries of the Coopers community.

Nash County Sheriff Stone picks new chief deputy

The Nash County Sheriff's Office has a new chief deputy.
Maj. Allen Wilson will now run the day-to-day operations of the sheriff's office and oversee all employees.
Wilson fills the position left vacant by Brandon Medina who served as chief deputy for seven years before leaving earlier this year to accept a position as police chief in Fuquay-Varina.

Forty Inducted into NCWU's National Society of Leadership & Success

Sigma Alpha Pi, North Carolina Wesleyan University's chapter of the National Society of Leadership & Success (NSLS) hosted its sixth induction of student leaders into the organization. The ceremony was held Tuesday, November 29 at 3:00 p.m. in the Garner Lobby of The Dunn Center. The NSLS is the nation's largest leadership honor society, with more than 700 chapters and over 1.2 million members.
