Food Bank buys Bass Brothers building

MOMEYER -- With no clear path forward as far as rezoning, a local charity has purchased a shuttered grocery store.
A Touch of the Father's Love Ministry and Food Bank bought Bass Brothers IGA at 5193 Momeyer Way for $585,000, according to deed transfer records.
"We own it. I don't want to talk about it much beyond that right now," said ATOFL board member Roger Warren.

Lawmaker opposes pistol to rifle rule

The area's newly elected legislator is asking federal authorities not to require a license for a conversion kit that can turn a pistol into a rifle.
State Rep. Allen Chesser, R-Nash, sent a letter to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives last week stating that a federal firearms license for the attachments goes against the Second Amendment.

Nash 4-H'ers recognized

The holidays may be over but Nash County 4-H still has a lot to celebrate.
Several 4-H youth and leaders were recognized on Monday night at the annual awards banquet, themed "Holiday Fun and Awards." The banquet is held each year to recognize 4-H members, volunteers and leaders for their accomplishments for the year prior.

Interstate shootout case ends in mistrial

A hung jury resulted in the mistrial last week of a Florida man accused of trying to kill a deputy during an interstate shootout two years ago.
Jarred Ford, 35, stood accused of attempted murder in the Feb. 4, 2021, shooting of Deputy Tommy Toney during a traffic stop on Interstate 95.
Despite the state mistrial, Ford received a decade behind bars in federal prison for possession of a firearm as a felon stemming from the incident.

Spring Hope man busted for drugs

Kenneth Brandon Pomeroy, 37, of Strawbush Court in Spring Hope, faces charges of being a habitual felon; destroying evidence; possessing fentanyl; resisting, obstructing and delaying deputies; possessing marijuana; and possession of drug paraphernalia. He received a $400,000 bond.
On Jan. 24, narcotics detectives were in the Red Oak area near Battleboro and Deans roads when they witnessed an apparent drug transaction at Faulkner's Convenience Store, said Maj. Eddie Moore of the Nash County Sheriff's Office.

Nashville mulls vehicle lease program

The Town of Nashville is considering a partnership with Fleet Enterprise Services to lease police cars and other town vehicles.
Council members heard a presentation from company representatives Doug Reville and Chrissy Huff last Wednesday morning during a special called meeting.
Reville said he had first met with the town's police department in 2019 with the idea but due to timing, plans were put on hold.

Spring Hope man convicted of drug running

Local authorities say a Spring Hope man who had been moving large amounts of methamphetamine into Nash County has been sent to federal prison.
Christopher Reed Pinner, 44, received a sentence of eight years in federal prison for distributing methamphetamine in the Nash County area. He pleaded guilty to federal offenses committed in August 2020 including conspiracy to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute a quantity of methamphetamine and possession with the intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine.

State DMV warns of email scam

ROCKY MOUNT - The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles routinely receives complaints from customers who have been targeted by scammers claiming to be representatives of either the DMV or the N.C. Department of Transportation.
Recently, several law enforcement agencies have reported that many unsuspecting DMV customers are receiving scam emails from a group claiming to be from the Department of Transportation and encouraging targeted individuals to click on a link to pay a fine for an alleged driving violation.

Seven students graduated from Edgecombe Community College's Paramedic program on January 17. The graduation ceremony featured comments by Dr. Patrick Heins, president of ECU Health Edgecombe Hospital and a member of the ECC Board of Trustees. The one-year Paramedic program includes classroom instruction, clinical rotations, and an EMS field internship.

SANTA CLAUS CAMPAIGN

Nash County's Santa Claus Campaign to provide gifts to foster children was a huge success, organizers announced last week. The program provided Christmas presents for 60 children in foster care during the 2022 holiday seasons. Year-round donations help fulfill wish lists and support other activities including providing social and cultural experiences, showing support and appreciation to foster parents, and meeting individual needs of children in foster care.

Nashville man graduates UMGC

Walter Clifton Brown, of Nashville, earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from University of Maryland Global Campus in fall 2022.
Brown was one of more than 7,600 students worldwide who earned degrees from UMGC in the fall. Graduates came from all 50 states, five U.S. territories, and 18 countries.

Trimmer, Sauls unite in marriage

Julia Anne Trimmer and Timothy Wilson Rex Sauls were married on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at 3 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Methodist Church in Bailey. Timothy Sauls officiated the traditional Christian ceremony.
The bride is the daughter of William and Jeannine Trimmer.

Spaying and neutering is the single most effective way to keep unwanted animals from entering a shelter, decreasing the chances of an animal being euthanized.

Yeti Flight 691 tragedy points to souls

On January 15th, Yeti Airline Flight NYT 691 was flying from the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu, to Pokhara. The aircraft held 68 passengers and four crew members.
The plane left Kathmandu at 10:32 a.m. and was expected to land around 11 a.m. It was scheduled to be a short 24-minute trip.
They were slated to land at The Pokhara International Airport. Sadly, the plane rolled sharply as it approached the runway. It then hit the ground in the gorge of a river approximately one mile from the airport.

But biblically speaking, a church is much more than a building. In fact, some would say that the church is not a building at all, but is all about the people. But what is the church?
The early Christian church had no buildings, at least not in the sense of what we would consider church buildings today.

Roller skating and its social challenges were fun failures

A few weeks ago, a group from church went roller skating. I was out of town, which made a great excuse not to publicly humiliate myself.
I saw some of the photos on social media, and it brought back many memories of a major social event in Rocky Mount on the first Monday of every month back in the 1980s: Church Skate Night.
I didn't get out a whole lot, but Skate Night was not to be missed.

Brenda Wind is the best 4-H Volunteer of the Year!

Nash County 4-H held its annual Awards Banquet on Monday night.
I've covered the event for many years. Now, I have three kids involved in 4-H so they all tagged along, ready to cheer on fellow 4-H'ers and club leaders. If you look at the photos of the club, and you're a regular reader of this space, I have no doubt you'll be able to pick out my three crazy boys in the photo!
All three of my boys are in the Feathers and Fur 4-H Club, which was named the Club of the Year at Monday's event.

The interactive exhibit runs from Feb. 4 to May 14.
Get ready to travel back in time and see what it was like when these giant animals walked the Earth during the Cretaceous Period 65-145 million years ago. Children will be able to climb, touch and explore the prehistoric world in the land of dinosaurs.
