Herman Lee Thornell

Herman Lee Thornell, age 86, went to be with the Lord on June 14, 2016. He was born in Nash County on October 2, 1929, to the late Sue and Dan Thornell. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 34 years Ethel Thornell, and two brothers, Dan and Millard Thornell.

He is survived by his sisters, Carolyn Landing and husband Dick and Vernell Calhoun and husband Billy; son, Gregg Thornell and wife Shannon; daughter, Mary Emig and husband Daryl; grandchildren, Daryl Emig, Paige Emig, Benjamin Emig and Ethan Thornell.

He served in the United States Army where he was a Military Police Officer. After his service in the Army, Herman worked at the Planters Oil Mill for 15 years, and he farmed throughout his life. Herman's passion was always farming and he instilled that farming work ethic into his children and grandchildren.

The funeral service was held on Friday June 17, 2016 at 12:00 PM at Johnson Funeral Home 661 English Road, Rocky Mount. Visitation was held Friday from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM at Johnson's Funeral Home. Burial followed the service at Rocky Mount Memorial Park.
