Annie Mae Smith Warren

Annie Mae Smith Warren

Annie Mae Smith Warren, aged 93, passed away peacefully at her home in Spring Hope on August 7, 2018. "Smittie", as her friends called her, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. L Smith of Rocky Mount, NC. She was one of 7 children being predeceased by her parents, her brothers Clarence, Garland, and James, and her sisters Gladys and Katie. She is survived by her sister Jacqueline Johnson of Durham.

After graduation from high school, she enrolled in Parkview Nursing School in Rocky Mount completing her R.N. degree in 1946. She married a handsome U.S. Air Force pilot, Willard "Skip" Warren in November of that year in a marriage that lasted 49 years until his death in July, 1996 During his time in the Air Force they traveled extensively making their home in Okinawa, Colorado, Mississippi, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida. They returned to Spring Hope in 1952 and began Warren and Brantley Oil Company a few years later.

She was a member of Gibson Memorial Church and taught both Sunday School and Bible School. Her claim to fame was her famous "sweet potato casserole" which she baked many, many times for the Methodist Men's supper. She was very involved in the Salad Fair with her friend Faye Bunn. In her later years, she joined White Oak United Methodist church as it reminded her of the small country church she attended when she was a girl.

Smittie was a member of the Spring Hope line dancing group and enjoyed performing at nursing homes and other venues. When her knees began to bother her, she dressed as Frosty the Snowman during the Christmas season and greeted and "loved on" the patients at the nursing homes while her friends danced.

Smittie enjoyed decorating for the holidays, her bridge clubs, entertaining and all animals--especially cats and dogs. Smittie loved flowers and raised African violets for many years. She had an encyclopedic knowledge of who was related to whom and never met a stranger. She could talk to anyone and usually knew their parents and parents' parents. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a joke for every occasion. She enjoyed travel and went to many Air Force reunions with her husband including one in Duxford, England for WWII fighter pilots.

Smittie was a delight to those that knew her and always looked her best even when she didn't feel her best. She enjoyed her weekly trips to Sylvia's Hairstyling in Spring Hope and visiting with the ladies there. The family sends special thanks to Sylvia Williams for the home visit the day before her passing.

She loved and is survived by her children Roger (Vivian) and Susan; her grandchildren Erin (Sean), Stacey (Brian), Ana (Bryan) and Kenan Matthew (Jordan); three great grandchildren she loved; Quinn, Kate, and Grady; numerous nieces and nephews and her cat, Sweet Pea Prissy Pants.

The family would like to especially thank Betty Creighton, her caregiver, for her care and assistance, encouragement and bright spirit during the last months of Smittie's life. We would also like to thank Dr. Bello, Dr. Desai and Dr. Prasada of Boice Willis Clinics in both Nashville and Rocky Mount and Community Hospice of Rocky Mount.
