Nash declared disaster county by USDA
Nash County farmers will feel the effects of the current drought for months to come but Extension Agent Charlie Tyson said help may be on the way.

Contracts awarded for water project
Because of recent water shortages throughout Nash County, phase one of Nash County’s Regional Water System will get an early start. The Nash County Board, acting as the Nash Central Water and Sewer District Board, awarded two contracts last week during a recessed meeting. Work is slated to start in a few weeks with a 60-day construction period. More ...

Castalia resident named Postmaster in Sharpsburg
Castalia resident Jeanette Evans first began her postal career in 1986 working four hours a week in Castalia’s Post Office. Now, 21 years later, Evans is serving as the boss in Sharpsburg’s Post Office.
Evans said she doesn’t consider herself boss but instead a co-worker and friend.
On Thursday, September 12, a host of co-workers and friends throughout Nash County attended Evans’ Postmaster installation ceremony at the Sharpsburg Post Office.  More ...

Dead body found in woods in Middlesex
The body of a Hispanic man from Zebulon was found dead Friday afternoon in Middlesex.
According to Lt. Pat Joyner of the Nash County Sheriff’s Office, the body of 46-year-old Ciriaco Medrano Ponce was found in the edge of the woods, approximately 10 feet off the shoulder of Bryant Road in Middlesex. Joyner said a few men had pulled over to use the bathroom and smelled a foul odor. They found the body and called law enforcement.  More ...

Fifteen area fire departments came together for some friendly competition at the Fifth Annual Nashville Firefighter’s Day on Saturday. The day included several competitions among both junior and senior members of fire departments. Final preparations are under way for the International Coastal Cleanup, a global effort to rid the environment of debris. Last year, nearly 360,000 international volunteers from 68 nations participated in this worldwide cleanup. In North Carolina, more than 14,000 volunteers cleaned almost 2,500 miles and retrieved more than 540,000 pounds of debris during the 2006 North Carolina Big Sweep, the North Carolina component of the ICC. More ...
