A 150-foot-long, 4-feet-wide concrete island is planned for West Washington in front of some of the town's busiest restaurants and stores.

Nash County Animal Friends' Notebook

Scrabbling every week is what we do, trying to save the homeless pets that end up in the Nash County Animal Control Shelter. This last week, several times, there wasn't one available kennel for the next canine intake. The majority of the intakes are not neutered or spayed, and they went looking to mate with another. Their noses will take them for miles from home.

Third detection of CWD confirmed in NC deer herd

A third deer in North Carolina has tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). Officials with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission reported the deer was hunter-harvested in Surry County this archery season approximately 10 miles from the two previous positive detections in Yadkin County.
The Wildlife Commission's Wildlife Management Division Chief, Brad Howard, said that although another detection is disappointing, it's an encouraging sign that the agency's response plan is working, and a lot of people are helping to put that plan into effect.

Waterfowl hunters should take Avian Influenza precautions

Officials from North Carolina natural resources and public health agencies remind waterfowl hunters to be observant and careful when handling wild birds during hunting season. Although no new highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) infections in wild birds have been documented in North Carolina since March, those birds that migrated to other states and Canada during the spring and summer, where HPAI was present, are returning to North Carolina for the winter.

The origins of Halloween

"The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light." (Romans 13:12)
October is a great month. Fall begins to show just how crisp of a season it can be, the World Series provides a crowning end to our national pastime, and Halloween forces most of us to the grocery store for a last-minute purchase of candy for the kids.

Intersections: God and Life

If you place yourself at the center of your universe, pretty soon your world becomes very small and meaningless. Self-centeredness never satisfies. It leaves a bitter taste in your mouth - an aftertaste. There's more to life than just you. If you make you the center, if you make yourself a little god, you'll quickly realize life is meaningless. Like Proverbs 28:25 says, "Selfishness only causes trouble."

State fair marks time for better or worse

My family almost didn't make it to the State Fair this year, which would have made a three-year losing streak. We managed to slide in quietly on the last day Sunday with 105,000 other people.
I loved the State Fair as a kid, and my family didn't go every year, so it remained a pretty exotic, big time event.
