EGG HUNT
Nash County Parks and Recreation hosted its annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday morning at Red Oak’s Ennis Park. Youth ages one through ten came out to participate in the hunt, which was put on by Nash County Parks and Recreation, Walgreens and Red Oak Baptist Church. In addition to the Easter Egg Hunt, there was also face painting, bounce houses, door prizes as well as pictures with the Easter Bunny. Northern Nash student killed
A Northern Nash sophomore was killed on Sunday night when his vehicle ran off the road and over corrected, crashing into a ditch.
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, 16-year-old Spenser Wayne Davis was traveling south on Halifax Road, near Hunter Hill Road, around 6:30 p.m. when he ran off the road to the right. Reports say Davis overcorrected to the left and crossed the center line of roadway, running off the road to the left and colliding with a ditch. More ...

Former District Attorney dies
Howard Boney, Jr., the former longtime District Attorney for Nash, Edgecombe and Wilson Counties passed away last week at his home. He was 63 years old.
Boney, of Tarboro, became the Assistant District Attorney for the Seventh Prosecutorial District in 1978 and was later appointed by Governor Jim Hunt to serve as District Attorney. More ...

Nashville Distinguished Citizen passes away
Thelma Boone Cooke, who was Nashville’s Distinguished Citizen in 2001, passed away on Friday at the age of 87.
Cooke was born in Nash County on September 2, 1923 to the late Gilbert W. and Bettie W. Boone of Nash County.
She was married for 58 years to W.C. Cooke, Jr., also a Nashville native who served in the United States Navy. He passed away in 2003. More ...

Retired Sheriff K-9’s die
Two retired K-9’s from the Nash County Sheriff’s Office passed away recently.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, K-9 Kerro passed away  on March 14 after a tumor was discovered growing inside his stomach. Kerro served with the Sheriff’s Office from April 2004 until his retirement in May 2010. K-9 Kerro was handled by then Sgt. Eddie Moore and lived with him and his family after retirement until his passing. More ...

Local man found guilty of trafficking opium
A Nashville man was found guilty of trafficking opium and sentenced to up to 160 months in prison.
Superior Court Judge Quentin Sumner sentenced Glenn Edward Whittington, of Red Oak Road, Nashville, to 144 to 160 months in the North Carolina Department of Correction.

Allie Farmer read the Bible verse for today. She is always ready. I enjoyed preparing the lesson on Christ’s triumphal entry for today. I know the teacher always learns more than the students; because he or she studies more than the students. I enjoy the studying part. I learn more.

Benton Moss, a senior at Rocky Mount High School, has been awarded the Morehead-Cain Scholarship.
The Morehead-Cain is a four-year merit scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The scholarship is valued at $105,000 and includes Summer Enrichment Programs, a computer, travel and an annual stipend for miscellaneous expenses.

The littering season has started.  What do I mean by this?  I mean that the Shelter is starting to see litters.  Babies.  In fact, they received 3 litters, for a total of 15 puppies last week.  The only thing I can say is this – thank God they were weaned!  We were lucky.  Three of the babies got adopted right away and the SPCA Alliance of NC found a rescue to take the rest of the first two litters.  As I write this on Sunday night, 5 little babies are looking for a forever home.  Their pictures are posted on this page. More ...

The Lady Gryphons piled up 176 points to win the girls event -- 44 points better than runner-up Wilson Fike.
