Board approves calendars, learns new accountability standards
Proposed school calendars for 2012-13 and 2013-14 were approved unanimously by the Nash-Rocky Mount Schools (NRMS) board at their work session last week.
Board members had repeatedly pointed out that the end of the first semester for next school year might make more sense if it were moved to January 17 instead of January 16 — in part, to give teachers a few days between semesters. More ...

Coopers Double Dog Dares you to shave your head for cancer
Coopers Fire & Rescue, along with the Bulldog Brigade, is once again hosting its annual St. Baldrick’s event to help fight childhood cancer on Saturday, March 17 from 3-7 p.m. at Coopers Vounteer Fire & Rescue Department on 3628 Volunteer  Road, just south of Sandy Cross.

Communities in Schools (CIS) is once again gearing up for its annual Dine Out event and hopes citizens will make March 15 a day of eating out.
Dine Out for Communities in Schools is a program in which local restaurants agree to contribute 10 percent of all sales on a certain day to Communities in Schools. Over $14,000 has been raised since the Dine Out program began. More ...

The late W.L. “Billy” Carter, Jr., who served as the North Carolina Cotton Producers Association’s executive vice president and was a former American Cotton Producers chairman, is the recipient of the 2011 Oscar Johnston Lifetime Achievement Award. Winstead Avenue Elementary School recently completed its fourth annual Valentine’s Day Cards’ campaign for Duke Children’s Hospital.  Homemade cards, illustrated by second-grader Zakizha Brown in Mrs. Mindi Collins’ class, were sold for 50 cents each during February.  All proceeds were donated to the Mix 101.5 Duke Children’s Hospital Radiothon. Cooley Library hosts Read-In
Nashville’s Harold D. Cooley Library hosted a Read-In on February 16. The Read-In was one of three held at libraries in Tarboro, Rocky Mount and Nashville. The events were sponsored by The Twin Counties Literacy Council. The Read-Ins gave the community an opportunity to come together and share excerpts from books of their choice by any author. Nash County Animal Friends’ Notebook
$250,000 for Shelter improvements is in the upcoming proposed Nash County Capital Projects Plan.  Seems like a lot, but it is not.  There was a request for $105,000 for Animal Control building expansion for the year 2008-09. Nothing was done because Nash County took that budgeted expansion money away for other projects.  So far, it isn’t even in the budget.  Will it be put in the budget?  If it is, will history repeat itself? More ...
