Religion can hinder salvation

It has been such a blessing over my lifetime to see people have salvation experiences. However, I've never witnessed one as dramatic as one I saw several years ago. A twenty-six year old man came to know the Lord fol-lowing a drama presented at our church. The drama depicted poor choices people often make and the consequences that they can bring. One of the scenes pointed out that hell is a real place and is full of lost souls who made poor choices.

Holy and Whole: Patterns for Life Together

The church should work towards redeeming words, sanctifying them, not cancelling them because they make us uncomfortable or perhaps because we heard something, somewhere about what a word means.
One such word is, "Pentecostal". For brothers and sisters in Christ, who do not identify with Pentecostal denominations, this term can cause severe confusion and angst, which is tragic.

Getting the whole picture is often overlooked

I was watching a show on TV recently that talked about a program that could potentially eradicate mosquitoes.
Like most people, I hate mosquitoes. The swatting and the bumps are annoying.
Worldwide, mosquitoes are much more dangerous. They are responsible for spreading ma-laria and dengue fever, killing millions of people and making mosquitoes among the most danger-ous creatures on earth.

The public should always be the priority

I think I was as shocked as anyone to find a public hearing was scheduled on October 27th for the county's redistricting plan.
I even asked if I had missed a meeting at which the plan, or plans, might have been unveiled or presented.
But I quickly learned, as many citizens, that the suggested plan unveil and the public hearing were happening at the same time, same day.

Central Wins, Makes Playoffs

ROCKY MOUNT -- With the new seeding process this season for the state football playoffs, it was uncertain how the brackets would shake down ahead of last Saturday's selection process by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.

KEEP ON WINNING

STANHOPE -- Try to think about what you were doing on August 18 -- and how long ago that seems as we creep toward the holiday season.
And that will put into perspective how long it has been since the Southern Nash Firebirds have dropped a boys soccer match.
Southern Nash's long undefeated streak is now at 23 after the Firebirds defeated Cape Fear by a 4-1 margin Monday in first-round action of the Class 3-A State Boys Soccer Playoffs at historic Firebird Stadium on the SNHS campus.

Northern gets past Gryphons

RED OAK -- While last Friday evening's football contest between the Northern Nash Knights and Rocky Mount Gryphons may not have had any meaning in terms of the Big East Conference standings, there was certainly no love lost between the two arch-rivals.
While the Knights had already secured their first conference title since 2010 with the previous week's win over Southern Nash, they still had a wall to knock down.

STANHOPE -- A Big East Conference crown wasn't in the cards this season for the Southern Nash Firebirds -- but Coach Brian Batchelor's club still has plenty to play for.
