Good Friday is just around the corner

It's hard to believe that Good Friday is next Friday.
Sadly, most of the world no longer sees much of the "Good" in Good Friday. I guess that's why most businesses no longer observe it as a holiday.
But Good Friday is more than a holiday. And while we call it "Good", it actually commemorates one of the darkest days in history. In fact, the Bible records that when Jesus died, "darkness came over the whole land". (Luke 23:44) That's God's reminder to us all about what sin does in our world. It separates us from God's light.

Intersections: God and Life

Not every institution that calls itself a church is really a true church. In the Bible, some such institutions are called "synagogues of Satan" (Rev. 2:9; 3:9). So, how can we tell if a church is really a church? When the New Testament church began in Acts 2, it was described this way: "So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers" (Acts 2:41-42). There was the preaching of God's word, the sharing of the common life, the ordinances, and prayer.

Letter to Holly on her 25th birthday

Dear Holly,
The theme for these 12 months could be "How Many Things Can Be Crammed Into a Year?"
You squeezed a graduate degree, a move, a new job and -- gasp -- an engagement into one year. Give it another two months and we can add "wedding" to the list.
Yep, "Dear Hollys" started in 2000. People told me it was good I was writing those things down because I'd be surprised how many things I'd forget. I thought they were crazy.

Nash County desperately needs a cat TNR program

A report was shared with me this week containing 2024 data from animal shelters in our region. Nash seems to be on the high end of euthanizations again - which is disappointing. The largest number looks to be cats but with a high percentage of the dog intake as well. We are researching the report for more in-depth information before offering a full report in the paper, but I wanted to at least cast my opinion this week in what seems to be a huge, if not extreme, problem here in Nash County - feral cats.

NC'S LINE LEADER

ROCKY MOUNT -- Talk about making the most of a single opportunity -- that's the story of Aiden Scott's football career at Nash Central High School.
Before his junior year, Scott was working as a backup offensive lineman for the Bulldogs -- until one fateful preseason practice day.
"One of our guys who was going to be a starter missed a practice, so we put Aiden in there with the first team,'' said NCHS head coach Chris Lee. "He never gave it up and ended up being a very good player for us.''

Bulldogs building this year

ROCKY MOUNT -- Todd Brewer expected a few ups and downs this season from his Nash Central softball squad, especially considering the fact that the Lady Bulldogs only have one senior (infielder Layla Lafferty) on their roster.
And that's exactly what the young Lady Bulldogs have provided this spring. Moments of jubilation and moments of disappointment have equaled out to the extent that Coach Brewer's crew carried a .500 mark of 7-7 heading into this week's action.
