Oliver D. Joyner, age 89, of Rocky Mount, passed away on Monday, January 16, 2017. Born in Nash County on April 29, 1927, he was the son of the late John Luther Joyner and Effie Mae Batts Joyner. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Geneva Beaman Joyner; daughter, Francie Smith; brothers, Nurney Joyner and Alton Joyner; and sisters, Reba Carpenter, Doris Poplin, and Judy Horchler.
He is survived by wife, Ruth Scott Joyner; and son, Kenneth Joyner and wife, Judy, of Wilmington; 2 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; step-sons, Randy Collier, Dwight Collier and wife, Ella; son-in-law, Charles Smith; brothers, Delton Joyner and wife, Lois, and Chessell Joyner; sisters, Linda Tyson and husband, Wayne, Margie Joyner, Velma Winstead and husband, Dixie Lee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Mount Hermon Missionary Baptist Church, 5556 Bend of the River Road, Rocky Mount with the Rev. Justin Nale officiating. Burial will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service.
