DOROTHY "DOT" JOYNER FLORA

ROCKY MOUNT - Dorothy "Dot" Joyner Flora, passed away on Friday, August 25, 2017 after an extended illness with Lewy Body Dementia. She was surrounded by her loved ones. Born in Rocky Mount on October 15, 1930, she was the daughter of the late William Rufus Joyner, Sr. and Flara Mae Rose Joyner. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Warren Flora, Jr.; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, William Warren Flora, Sr. and Alma Strickland Flora; and her sister-in-law, Gail Casey Joyner.

Joining her husband stationed in the US Navy, she enjoyed a period of time living in Kodiak, Alaska, as well as San Diego, California. In later years, she was a stay-at-home mother to her three children, working only part-time in retail while living in Rocky Mount, Florence, SC, and Chesapeake, VA. She and her husband returned to Rocky Mount in 1974 and in 1977, opened Floras Glass and Mirror Company, Inc. The business continues today under the ownership of their two sons. Dot was an active member of Arlington Baptist Church (formerly Arlington Street Baptist Church) until her disease progressed and she was unable to attend.

Dot is survived by her two sons, Michael Warren Flora and wife, Ella Humphrey Flora, of Red Oak; and William Patrick Flora and wife, Brenda Leigh Flora, of Rocky Mount; one daughter, Kimberly Flora Shields and husband, Bradford Leon Shields, of Boone; three grandsons, Christopher Michael Flora and wife, Lea Anne, of Nashville; Bradford Leon Shields, Jr. and wife, Dani, of Ramstein Air Base, Germany; and Cameron Patrick Flora of Rocky Mount; four granddaughters, Michelle Flora Ams and husband, Joey, of Nashville; Lisa Flora Miolla and husband, Joe, of Norfolk, VA; Sarah Joyner Shields and fiancé, Dan Duval, of Boston, MA; and Meredith Joy Shields of Boone; seven great-grandchildren, Cooper Ams, Gabbi Ams, Peyton Flora, Chason Flora, and Gracyn Flora, all of Nashville, Ashleigh Miolla of Norfolk, VA, and Jordan Shields of Germany. Dot is also survived by her brother, William Rufus Joyner, Jr. and wife, Martha; and sister-in-law Judy Flora Hobgood and husband, Bill; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

A Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Pineview Cemetery with Rev. Mike Stamper officiating. A visitation with the family will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Arlington Baptist Church, 1500 Bethlehem Road, Rocky Mount, NC 27803.

The family would also like to thank Shirley Brantley, Cheryl Collie, and Amy Stokes for their outstanding care of their mother during her last years.
