Nash cyclist honored with 83-mile birthday trek
Nash cyclist honored with 83-mile birthday trek

RED OAK - A former Northern Nash High School Ag teacher had a birthday last month - his 83rd. Most people might mark the occasion with cake, cards or balloons, but that wasn't the case for Allan Buss. He went for a 'little' bike ride - 83 miles, one mile for each year- and took a bunch of his biking buddies with him.
This isn't the first time the biking group - which doesn't have a name but has members from Red Oak, Rocky Mount, Hollister and Pinetops - has celebrated Buss that way; this is year four, and every year, the ride gets longer.

NFD completes Project Lifesaver recertification

NASHVILLE - It looked like a cross between an Easter Egg Hunt and Hide and Seek: but instead of children, the "hunters" were Nashville firefighters, using radio frequency receivers to hone in on what Chris Jenkins, Deputy Fire Marshal, had hidden in, on, or under equipment stored behind the Nashville Fire Department. Unlike Easter Eggs, the small transmitters were not brightly-colored, or edible, but were designed to carry a real life "prize": finding one could be a difference between life and death.

Recipe for a good prayer life
Recipe for a good prayer life

Several years ago, I had to fly to New York for a business meeting. It was definitely a flight I will never forget!
Aisle seats have always been the most comfortable seats on an airline to me. And since it was a two-hour flight, I asked the travel agent to reserve an aisle seat for me.
I boarded the plane and quickly found my seat. However, there was a young man with crutches that appeared in greater need of an aisle seat.

Nash nixes Emergency Services position

NASHVILLE - An unexpected, last-minute job reclassification for Nash County's Emergency Services Director's position Oct.7 is raising questions, some of which have to do with the legality of the move.
Less than five hours after Sue Leggett, commissioner, again addressed the priority of filling the position, the board went into closed session for approximately four hours, re-convening for less than five minutes to vote in open session on "reclassifying" the Emergency Services Director job as "Emergency Services Manager," which carries a lesser pay grade; Charles "Tripp" Bunn, existing Assistant Director of Emergency Management, was given the position.

Nashville passes public record policy

NASHVILLE - A new public records request policy adopted by the town of Nashville establishes the request process, but also imposes charges for staff time spent over four hours, a stipulation that may be illegal under state statute.
Lou Bennett, town clerk, presented the new policy at the Oct. 1 town council session, explaining that a recent "very large request" made her realize that there was no form in place for public records requests, with the town website advising members of the public to just "call the town clerk, basically." In response to a question from The Graphic, Bennett said she most often gets requests for emails, police reports and financial reports.

NASHVILLE- A recent violation of drinking water standards for Nashville's water system is not categorized as an emergency, but Health Department officials are recommending that pregnant women, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems drink bottled water until the situation is resolved. This includes infants, who should have bottled water used for their formulas.
