A draft copy of the 2006-2007 budget was presented to board members during their regular meeting Tuesday night. Town Manager Preston Mitchell told the board members it was standard for the manager to present the budget during the May meeting. The budget retreat was held in January to discuss and consult on matters that will face Nashville in the upcoming fiscal year.

Margaret Patterson, former mayor of Castalia and a present town commissioner, passed away quietly at her home on the morning of May 2. Patterson served the town of Castalia for over twelve years. She served first as a town commissioner and then served one term as mayor for the town. She then served an additional term as a town commissioner. In the most recent election, Patterson lost her bid for re-election but was appointed to fulfill the unexpired term of Jennifer Pernell, who resigned last year.
SPRING HOPE – Geraldine M. Edwards, 76, died Sunday, April 30, 2006.Funeral services were conducted on May 2 at Ephesus Baptist Church by the Rev. Gene Whitehouse and the Rev. Bill Wakefield. Entombment will be at a later date at Peachtree Baptist Church cemetery.
Nash Arts welcomes Dawn Wilson's play, "Jesu of Fondue" to its stage this weekend as part of its N.C. Play Rite Series. Eunice Langley Batchelor, 84, died Tuesday, April 18, 2006. She was born in Nash County on January 9, 1922, the daughter of the late Willie Lindsey Langley and Emma Baker Langley. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, William Thomas Batchelor, Jr.
Matthew Keith Denton, 19, died Saturday, April 22, 2006. He was born in Nash County on September 2, 1986 to Ronnie Denton and Susan Woodruff Denton. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Roy and Pearl Denton.
NASHVILLE – Dercie Earl Bailey, 85, died Tuesday, April 18, 2006. Funeral services were held Friday, April 21 at Forest Hill Cemetery in Nashville.
WILSON – Cuyler Deems Best, Jr., 66, of Wilson died on April 24, 2006 after a lengthy illness. A native of Wayne County, he was the youngest son of the late Cuyler Deems Best, Sr. and Frances Herring Best. He was a graduate of North Carolina State University and taught vocational agriculture in Nash County for over 30 years.

Without trying to be overly dramatic, I have to relate an episode recently that burdened — wait, no ... crippled — my business and personal life. It caused mental anguish as well as embarrassment.
April is just about over which means before we know it, summertime will be here. It has been a month full of happenings all over the county, including two things we all should pay more close attention to. April is Prevent Child Abuse Month and Sexual Abuse Awareness Month.

Superintendent Rick McMahon presented the Nash-Rocky Mount (N-RMS) Board of Education proposed changes to the current student academic achievement policy that take an aggressive stance to help students succeed.
One hundred is Ruby Stallings' lucky number, at least for this year. The Nashville resident turned 100 on April 14 and was given a birthday party at Nash Grover Manor, where she resides, with over 100 of her closest friends and family attending the special event. Her children attribute hard work as the reason for Stallings' long life.

Nashville officials held an emergency meeting last week to approve a resolution requesting the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) appropriate funds for a new library and town hall. Now, the town will wait and see if USDA approves the $2.28 million loan before announcing plans for the new building.

Air Force Senior Master Sgt. 1st Sgt. Faye J. Ellison has retired from the U.S. Air Force after more than 22 years of military service.
