Multi-agency volunteer initiative helps local veteran

NASHVILLE - It takes a village - and 30 to 40 volunteers supplied a village of help to a Nashville couple July 19, supplying a new fence, flagpole and other home repairs during a veterans' help initiative.
Shawn Holland, vice-president of Seegars Fence Company of Rocky Mount, said he tries to do a project to help local veterans several times each year, having started with the DAVFI (Disabled American Veteran Fence Initiative), which focuses on putting up a free fence for disabled veterans who have service dogs.

Nashville completes land use regulations proposal

NASHVILLE - Newly-revised land use regulations for the town of Nashville will be up for public comment before a vote for adoption at the August 20 town council meeting.
The result of several months of meetings between town leaders and Michael Harvey of N-Focus Consultants, a Planning, Zoning and Subdivision Administrator, the ordinance was expanded with parts added and other parts re-written in order to align with state changes and assist in code enforcement.

Town votes "NO" on church purchase

NASHVILLE - After months of dissent between council members and differing opinions from the general public, the plan to purchase the Fellowship Church property on Old White Oak Road as a new town hall is dead.
By a unanimous vote, the Nashville town council passed a motion at its August 6 town meeting not to buy the property, allowing the church to keep its $5,000 earnest money deposit.

Three charged with Exum Rd. homicide

NASHVILLE - A 21-year-old Dortches man is dead and three people arrested, charged with first degree murder and armed robbery, after a fatal shooting over the weekend in Nashville.
Nash County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a report of a shooting at 1971 Exum Road at 3:16 a.m. Saturday and found Caleb Turner injured with multiple gunshot wounds. Life saving measures were attempted, but Turner was pronounced dead on site, according to an August 6 NCSO press release.

Fisher receives State Long Leaf Pine Award

NASHVILLE - Former Nash County Assistant Director for Emergency and Fire Rescue Services, Brent Fisher, has been awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest award for state service granted by the Governor. His brother Bryant Fisher, who heads up Nash 9-1-1, presented his twin with the award at the Nash County Board of Commissioners' meeting August 5.

Nash denies Oak Level subdivision expansion

NASHVILLE - Expansion plans for an Oak Level area subdivision, Castle Berry Phase Three, are stalled following a denial for a special use permit to allow conditional rezoning August 5 by the Nash Board of Commissioners.
Aaron Chalker, senior planner for the Nash Planning Department, presented plans Monday for the 36.9 acres of undeveloped land located at the intersection of Oak Level Road and Barnes Hill Church Road, Nashville, owned by H&S Land LLC.

EMS shortages fuel discord, disagreements

NASHVILLE - Continued allegations of insufficient EMS ambulance staffing in the southern end of Nash County by the Mayor of Bailey were addressed by the county manager at Monday's Board of Commissioners meeting, with the board chair issuing a plea to elected officials and the public to "get the facts" and to stay away from issuing negative comments.

A state investigation is still open more than six months after the death of a Nashville girl, 19-year-old Amarriah CeAnna Smith, while the man accused of killing her, 29-year-old Jordan Isaiah Thomas with addresses listed in both Edenton and Elizabeth City, is still behind bars in Chowan County with no bail, charged with first-degree murder.

Nash County appoints two new department heads

NASHVILLE - Nash County has appointed two new department heads: Mary Hogan as finance director and Marian Cascone as tax administrator.
Hogan will take the place of Nashville native Donna Wood, who is resigning her position after 9 years to take a job with the North Carolina Capital Management Trust; Cascone will take on the job vacated by Doris Sumner, who is retiring after 24 years with the county, the last four as tax assessor.

I think there's a chance I'd be good at being rich

The stock market took a beating earlier this week. This happens every so often and usually when it all shakes out, folks who see it for an overreaction make a lot of money. Many times, they already had a lot of money due to being rich.
Most of the super-rich people we hear about are pretty terrible at being rich. I feel like I'd do a right fair job at it if given the chance at being wealthy.
It seems like I might have missed the boat on the big money thing.

Regulation is a big word when talking about the 1st Amendment

It seems our county is once again attempting to snuff out chatter on social media which is like a cat chasing its tail.
Time was set aside again this month, during the county commissioners meeting, to address multiple comments on facebook about county topics.
Indeed, I can understand why the chatter can infuriate one who may know the facts to be different. However, there are always two ways to look at everything.
One can listen to the explanations given by the county manager and accept those words as factual.

A number of the newer bible translations refer to this parable as the "Parable of the Lost Son" rather than the "Parable of the Prodigal Son". I invite you to read the parable in Luke 15 and ask yourself who really is the "lost son" mentioned here?
You know the story. It's one of the most familiar accounts in the Scriptures. A father of two sons was approached by his younger son who demanded his inheritance.

Prayer is the best way to respond to trouble. Psalm 50:15 says, "Call upon me in the day of trouble, I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me." How should you pray when troubles come? Consider how Psalm 138 answers. It is a prayer of thanksgiving. Every prayer should involve and include thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is the main ingredient of this prayer of praise.
This psalm of thanksgiving is ascribed to David. We do not know the historical background of this psalm. However, the text gives several clues.

NC Wesleyan University receives funding from NSF

North Carolina Wesleyan University (NCWU) has been awarded a grant of $251,835 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for an innovative project titled "WESPATHS: Waterways for Environmental Science-Promoting Advancement and Training for Hands-On Supports." This award marks NCWU's first NSF grant since 1972 and aims to bolster the university's Environmental Science Program through strategic recruitment and retention efforts.
