The Brooklyn Area Community Watch donated funds to the Harold D. Cooley Library. A note of thanks and gratitude goes to Melissa Mills for allowing the Community Watch and other non-profit organizations to hold meetings at the library. ROCKY MOUNT -- Dani Abbey, Jena McFadden, and Meredith Mills were all honored on Senior Day as the North Carolina Wesleyan College Battling Bishop fast-pitch softball team outscored Mary Baldwin 19-2 over two games last Friday afternoon. In the first game of the doubleheader, the Bishops were led by great hitting and pitching en route to a 10-1 win in five innings.

A chance visit to what used to be The Funky Trunk led to the creation of another business, On a Whim. Nicole Elliott-Taybron and Phyllis Woodley were visiting the Funky Trunk one day when they discovered the building would soon be available. The two worked together and Elliott-Taybron said she had always had a desire to have a business.

FRANKLIN COUNTY -- The first Big East Conference boys golf match after Spring Break culminated in the same result as all of the previous ones this spring -- with the Roanoke Rapids Yellow Jackets taking first place in the overall team standings.Roanoke Rapids, also the defending league champion, saw its margin of victory drop, but the Yellow Jackets still got the job done by finishing with 347 team strokes to take the 18-hole competition last Wednesday at The River Golf Course near Bunn.

216.Cedar Grove Elementary School holds first spelling bee event
Cedar Grove held its first spelling bee event on Wednesday, February 5.   Third through Fifth grade students participated in the spelling bee.  The winner of the spelling bee will represent Cedar Grove and participate with other Nash-Rocky Mount schools in a spelling bee that will be held at the Dunn Center at NC Wesleyan College on March 20, 2014.

217.Youth compete at annual 4-H Livestock Show and Sale
ROCKY MOUNT - Three days of farm fellowship, showmanship and competitions came to an end April 3 at the East Carolina Agriculture & Education Center on Kingsboro Road, Rocky Mount, with the annual Eastern Carolina 4-H Livestock Show and Sale. Ninety-five 4-H youth from Nash, Edgecombe and Halifax counties participated with their steers, lambs, pigs or goats after weeks of feeding, training, grooming and young farmer responsibilities.

Nash Democrats met on Thursday. March 27, for their annual Spring Rally held at the Momeyer Ruritan Club. 220.Cooley Library opens
Nashville’s Harold D. Cooley Library is back in business. The library has been closed since October 1 to move into its new facility on Church Street. The Town of Nashville announced plans to move the library to the former Joyner’s Grocery in May of 2006. A ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration were held on Thursday, January 17. The library opened at 9 a.m. and Library Director Melissa Mills said traffic was steady throughout the day.

222.VELMA GLADYS JONES
Born Velma Gladys Shearin on March 17, 1933 in Halifax County to the late John Wesley and Jennie P. Shearin. Her family moved to Nash County in 1942 and she resided there until her death on March 14, 2010. She worked at Rocky Mount Mills in the finishing Department for thirty years. After a short lived retirement she began to care for her great grandchildren on a daily basis until RA wouldn’t allow her to any longer. She was married for fifty two-years to her late husband, John Washington Jones. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Emery and James Shearin.

FAYETTEVILLE -- The North Carolina Wesleyan College baseball team split its conference doubleheader with rival Methodist University last Saturday as each thrilling game was decided by one run and a play at home plate to end it. Wesleyan's rally fell short 13-12 in game one while the Bishops held on to win 8-7 in game two by throwing out the runner at home to win it.

257.Spring Hope High School Class of 1962 holds 60th reunion
Spring Hope High School's Class of 1962 held its 60th reunion on May 21 at the Momeyer Ruritan Club building. A total of 47 people attended the event, 29 of those were class members. The class originally consisted of 52 members who graduated. Eight members of the class have passed away.Nan Bass served as chairperson of the reunion committee.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Last Saturday, the North Carolina Wesleyan College Bishops baseball team played well against visiting Christopher Newport and seemingly was on the verge of a victory throughout the contest. The ninth-ranked Captains held on, though, and claimed a 3-2 victory. Sunday’s rematch, unfortunately for the Bishops, followed a sickeningly similar script.

The last Sunday in August proved to be the perfect day for a nature walk in Rocky Mount's Battle Park. The Nash-Rocky Mount Junior Garden Club held its first field trip to the park with a walk led by Friends of Battle Park founder, Tom Stutz. Stutz taught the kids ways to recognize trees, plants, and different bushes.

267.Nashville town hall will relocate
Nashville's Town Council held an emergency meeting Tuesday to notify the public that the $2.3 million had been appropriated by the USDA for a new town hall and library complex. Though not finalized, the project will have the town hall moving into Joyner's Grocery and the library locating in Nashville Plaza. The current town hall will become Nashville Police headquarters and the current police station will make room for the fire department to expand.

DANVILLE, VA. -- North Carolina Wesleyan College's baseball team also split its last Friday USA South Conference twinbill at Averett University. The Bishops tallied a 12-0 win over the Cougars in the opener, led by junior hurler Nate Gardner's second straight complete-game shutout. NASHVILLE -- The Town of Nashville's regular youth soccer season came to a close this past Saturday at Glover Park. The U12 division saw the final matchup between Mary Ruffin Nationwide and Little Caesars during which Mary Ruffin Nationwide was victorious. Nationwide was led in goals by Dallas Ray and Cameryn Outerbirdge, but also saw goals scored by Hannah Mills and Destiny Davis.

Nash County Health Department has teamed up with Walgreens and Greater Than AIDS to host National HIV Testing Event. This testing event will be held on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 from 11am-7pm at Walgreens located at 1590 Benvenue Road in Rocky Mount, NC. Trained counselors will be available to provide free confidential counseling and testing using Rapid HIV, Rapid Hepatitis C and Rapid Syphilis test. Individuals will receive their testing results within 15 minutes.

SPRING HOPE - Voting on the adoption of system development fees (SDFs) for the town of Spring Hope has been tabled in order to allow another month to refine specific language terms and add additional necessary elements. A public hearing and adoption had been scheduled at the September 3 Spring Hope Board of Commissioners meeting following a May presentation by Gary Hartong, President of the Wooten Company, during which he explained various cost methods the town could use to charge developers for connection to major water and sewer utilities; the charges are authorized under state statutes based on municipal utility costs.

Five locals face drug charges

In the final week of Operation: Punisher, the Nash County Sheriff’s Office arrested five more locals for miscellaneous drug violations. Operation: Punisher began over eight months ago and as part of phase three, one person was arrested every day from December 1, 2009 until January 1, 2010. Though the operation is over, Lt. Scott Parker, who heads up the Narcotics Division of the Sheriff’s Office, said arrests will continue.

292.Fellow chamber member and friend will be missed
Last week, members of the community and the Nashville Chamber of Commerce lost a dear friend. Beth Mills, who was only 46 years old, passed away Tuesday, August 19, after a two-year battle with cancer. Beth has served on the board of directors of The Nashville Chamber of Commerce and as vice-president. She also served on several committees and was one to always make sure details were taken care of.
