Preliminary results of Nash-Rocky Mount Schools' (N-RMS) yearly testing show a 76% student proficiency in reading. For the 2005-6 school year, 22 of 29 N-RMS schools met 100% of their goals in reading to reach their Annual Yearly Progress (AYP), toward the ultimate goal of 100% student proficiency by 2013-14. Math and overall growth results will be available in October. In 2004-5, the previous school year, 17 of N-RMS' 29 schools met AYP.

ELM CITY, NC-Effie Lee Davis Richards, 87, died Tuesday, July 18, 2006. She was born in Nashville, NC, November 6, 1918, daughter of the late Johnie Richard Davis and Ella Mae Robbins Davis. Mrs. Richards was a member of Union Missionary Baptist Church.
Last week's passing of Southern Nash Band Director Michael Lancaster left many of us in disbelief. Though I didn't know Lancaster as well as hundreds of students and co-workers, all of my experiences with him were very positive. One thing I will always remember of him is his willingness to help us out at the Blooming Festival.

It's official. After over a year of speculation that a Wal-Mart would locate in Nashville, town officials confirmed recently that the Supercenter has submitted site plans to the town for approval.
Nashville Police say a shooting incident Monday afternoon in the parking lot of Advance Auto in Nashville was an apparent suicide. Carlos Alberto Garcia, 28, of Dutchman Road, Nashville, left the store Monday afternoon and allegedly shot himself at his vehicle, an SUV, parked at the store.

Nashville's first ever Athletic Youth Day was deemed a success and organizers say the event will be an annual one from now on. "It was very successful," Tracy Harvey, Extension Agent with the Nash County Cooperative Extension, said. "The weather was very cooperative. I'm so glad the sun didn't come out."
