Momeyer seeks town seal design ideas (relevance: 100%, date: Feb 19, 2025)
MOMEYER - In another step towards establishing town identity and to further its heritage, Momeyer town officials are inviting the public to submit designs for a town seal.
Will Funderburg, Mayor, showed council members a sketch he had unearthed recently at the town hall, while Edward Jackson, councilman, said he recalled another potential design cropping up years ago. That design had three elements: a train bell, timber, and something about farming.

BAILEY - Southern Nash Middle School's (SNMS) Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) team showcased groundbreaking innovation and teamwork at the Statewide Future Cities Competition in Raleigh, earning the Jacob's Core Values Award from Jacobs Engineering and the Best Use of Construction Materials Award from Carolinas AGC.
Guided by this year's theme, "Above the Current," students tackled the pressing issue of rising sea levels, envisioning a futuristic floating island off North Carolina's coast.

If ever there was an oxymoron in the making, it has to be the Department of Government Efficiency.
DOGE, led by billionaire Elon Musk, is tasked with finding waste in the Federal government. That seems like the equivalent of forming a committee to see if Little Debbie Zebra Rolls taste good.

Waterkeepers Carolina, a science-based environmental advocacy group made up of 12 regional organizations that monitor North Carolina's rivers, has released its annual Swim Guide report, designed to provide an overall view of river health.
Water quality testing performed in the Tar-Pamlico watershed last year, one of 16 river basins in the state and covering over 6,400 square miles, had an 88% pass rate.

RED OAK -- It's been a year of streaks for Northern Nash's girls basketball team, as the Lady Knights lost their third straight matchup on Monday night to arch rival Rocky Mount.
Due to weather issues earlier in the season, Monday night's contest between the Lady Knights and Lady Gryphons was the first meeting between the two foes this season, with Rocky Mount dropping Northern in dominant fashion, 57-16.

MOMEYER - The Momeyer Town Council has voted to begin airing videos of town council and planning board meetings on You Tube beginning in March despite objections by planning board members, including a threat to quit by one alternate planning board member if meetings are videorecorded.
While the decision to videotape Momeyer meetings was originally approved in August of 2024, it was not enacted in order to involve town planners time for making input into videotaping protocols.

SPRING HOPE - A vacant lot at 303 S. Pine Street, formerly the site of JHRG Manufacturing, has been rezoned from Light Industrial to R8, residential, at the request of neighbors.
The Spring Hope Board of commissioners voted in favor of rezoning, following a recommendation for same from the town planning board and two residents who spoke in favor of the rezoning at a public hearing during the Feb. 3 commissioners' meeting.

RALEIGH -- One of the top student-athletes in Nash Central High School history is making waves at the next level, having just broken a near seven-year Atlantic Coast Conference record while competing on the men's swimming team at North Carolina State University.
That, of course , is Lance Norris, a Nash Central and Nash Rec legend in the pool who has shined as a member of the Wolfpack squad -- a team that is currently ranked fifth nationally and has won three straight ACC Championships.

RED OAK -- Northern Nash's boys wrestling program has been trending upward over the past several campaigns -- and that ascent continued with a strong 2024-24 season for the Fighting Knights.
Northern Nash claimed the top seed out of the Big East Conference for the Class 3-A State Playoffs, which meant a trip to Union Pines on February 1 for the first and second round of the postseason.

CARY -- Nash Central's star-studded senior swim class went out in style following strong performances at the Class 2-A East Regional and Class 2-A State Championships, both of which were held recently at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Wake County.
At the states, the NCHS girls squad took 27th place overall with 21 points, while the boys closed in the 29th position at 19 markers.
Central even boasted a medalist as senior standout Maddie Hart closed out her prolific career by taking fourth place in the Girls 50 Freestyle with a time of 24.98.

STANHOPE -- If you're a fan of Southern Nash High School athletics, mark your calendars for April 12. It's an evening that will certainly be a memorable one.
That's when SNHS will host its inaugural Athletics Hall of Fame Ceremony at the SNHS Gymnasium.
Eight Firebirds' legends will comprise the initial class -- four athletes and four coaches.

Jenkins Joins Brother At Barton (relevance: 33.3%, date: Feb 13, 2025)
RED OAK -- One of the area's top baseball players pledged his collegiate commitment on January 29 as Brady Jenkins of Northern Nash signed his letter-of-intent to attend Barton College just over one month ahead of kicking off his senior campaign.
Jenkins has been a three-sport star throughout his time at Northern, showcasing his skills not just on the baseball diamond but on the football field and soccer pitch as well.
