Water, sewer talks ongoing in Red Oak
“We still don’t have a final water and sewer agreement to consider,” Red Oak mayor Al Wester said at the regular business meeting on Monday, Febraury 4. “I understand that Rocky Mount is working on an agreement, but I have not seen it.”
In a later interview with Derek Hawkes, the Nash County Engineering and Utilities Director, Hawkes explained that a preliminary draft of an agreement for water and sewer services is being hammered out between Rocky Mount and Nash County. In turn, a similar agreement is in the works between the county and the Town of Red Oak to extend these services to the town. More ...

Nashville prepares to submit $1 million grant application
After making a few more budget cuts, the Town of Nashville is ready to submit an application for a $1 million Downtown Redevelopment Grant.
The town, along with Steve Player of the Wooten Company, have been working over the past several months to identify projects in downtown it wanted to finance with the grant money. When everything was added up, the total price tag was $1.9 million. Staff went back to the drawing board and reduced costs but were still slightly above what was needed for the $1 million grant. More ...

Sheriff’s Office to apply for grants
The Nash County Sheriff’s Office will move forward with applying for a Governor’s Highway Safety Grant that could fund four additional positions.
Nash County’s Board of Commissioners, during its regular meeting on Monday, approved a resolution to apply for the grant for the Sheriff’s Office. The grant, totalling $305,531 would be used to establish a Traffic Safety Crew within the county, which would provide enforcement and education on traffic safety. The grant, if received, would be for a three-year period with declining grant funding over the three years. More ...

Principal says police called for prevention
Although many parents expressed concerns to The Graphic about the police presence at Nash Central Middle School on Thursday, Jan. 31, school officials say no altercations occurred to warrant concern.
Principal Lorenzo Morgan told The Graphic that no fight occurred at school that day. The police, he said, were invited to campus at the end of the school day only to offset any altercations that could occur. But nothing happened. Lead paint delays project
High levels of lead paint have put a community development project on hold in Whitakers, Nash County Planner Rosemary Dorsey told Commissioners and Whitakers citizens on Monday morning.
Frank Evans, a resident of the Blooming Hill area of Whitakers, spoke to commissioners on behalf of the community and said he was concerned because the project has been on hold. Evans said the community building’s roof is leaking and poses a major risk. He questioned where the project was and what, if anything, could be done to alleviate the lead problems. Evans added he feared the clinic located in the community building would be forced to close because of the unsafe conditions of the roof. More ...

McLean is named 2008 Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year
Brittany McLean, a junior at Rocky Mount Senior High School, was named the 2008 Boys & Girls Clubs of Nash/Edgecombe Counties Youth of the Year last week.
All nominees and guests were treated to a special guest appearance of American Idol Ruben Studdard at the The Dunn Center during the awards ceremony.

Bailey’s Country Doctor Museum reopens after recent renovations
The Country Doctor Museum in Bailey, which had been closed for renovations, reopened Tuesday, Feb. 5.
The museum features exhibits about the history of rural health care. It had been closed since Dec. 24 for interior painting of the Farmer Annex and Freeman-Brantley Building. The heart of pine wood floors in the gift shop and apothecary were refinished. Crown molding was installed and electrical upgrades were made in exhibit areas. More ...

I’ll admit an initial voyeuristic thrill at seeing the front page of the January 30, 2008 issue of The Graphic. I was going to get to gawk at the sad mug shot of thirteen from the area arrested for drugs in Operation Clean Slate 2008. I quickly scanned to see who I might know or recognize. I suppose there is something about a public shamming ritual of this sort that grabs and holds my attention. More ...

RED OAK - Nash Central couldn’t repeat its regular season success during last Saturday’s NEW-6 Conference Wrestling Tournament.
There were a few glaring differences for the Bulldogs, however. An individual format was utilized, though team scores were ultimately added up at the conclusion of the event.

GREENVILLE -- After leading his team back to post-season play, East Carolina head coach Billy Godwin was recently honored by his peers as the 2008 North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association (NCBCA) College/University Coach-of-the-Year.
In 2002, Godwin, who lives in Rocky Mount and prepped at Northern Nash, also received the NCBCA Coach-of-the-Year award while at Louisburg College after guiding the Hurricanes to a sixth place finish at the College World Series.  More ...
